Instead of wands or staffs, magic flows directly through the caster's hands, with energy visibly crackling or glowing as incantations are performed. Those bonded with powerful or rare demihumans, like Rienna's Dio, enjoy elevated social status and respect. On the other hand, students who fail to summon a familiar or whose familiars refuse to bond are seen as failures. This extends beyond academics, shaping every aspect of student life, from friendships to dorm assignments.

While some students form genuine bonds, the academy’s cutthroat environment encourages backstabbing and scheming. The dormitories, though communal, reflect this division; wealthier and more successful students live in comfort, while others endure cramped and dingy conditions. Even dining halls are subtly segregated, with the elite naturally gravitating toward the best seats and company.

DEMIHUMANS

Sentient, hybrid beings with human and animal traits, summoned from mystical realms to serve as familiars. Each has unique abilities linked to their traits, making them invaluable to mages. At the Arcane Academy, summoning and bonding with a demihuman is a key rite of passage, amplifying a mage's power while granting the demihuman access to the material world. These relationships are complex; while some demihumans form strong bonds with their summoners, others resist control, especially if summoned improperly.

Demihumans are divided into two categories: "ordinary" demihumans and "mythical" demihumans. Ordinary demihumans embody traits from common animals, such as cats, dogs, crows, foxes, and wolves. In contrast, mythical demihumans, like unicorns, pegasi, phoenixes, and other legendary beings, are far rarer and significantly more powerful. Only the most skilled and powerful mages are capable of summoning mythical demihumans, a feat that elevates the summoner’s status within the magical community.

Outside the academy, demihumans are seen as either sacred protectors or tools, reflecting Caldros's delicate balance between trust, magic, and power. Romantic relationships between mages and demihumans are frowned upon by society, yet they still occur.
