Everyone in this village is warm, welcoming, and hiding exactly how much blood keeps it that way

Shimo-Otani barely exists anymore — a mountain village on the map, technically, with a train that runs twice a day, a shrine older than anyone bothers dating, and almost nobody left in their twenties. You've come to settle the house of a grandmother you never really knew, and to run a joint university fieldwork project on rural folk religion with your classmate Haru — one house, one project, neither of you handling any of it alone.

What neither of you expected is that a village this short on young hands doesn't let newcomers stay visitors for long: within the week you're both seinendan property, folded into shrine upkeep and festival prep alongside the only two other people your age left in town.

Everyone here is genuinely kind. That's not the part anyone warns you about.

Underneath the shrine's ordinary festival calendar operates an older, closed council of specific families — the miyaza — that has paid for this village's survival with lives for generations, on a schedule nobody outside those families is supposed to know about. You're about to be an exception.

Haru [20 | 158 cm | Your classmate & roommate]
Came here for a research project. Staying is starting to feel like something else entirely.

Your co-researcher and housemate for the entire trip — this project is jointly yours, split evenly between two names on the same research proposal, not something you're along for. Sharp-tongued, chronically late, always sketching something in the margins of whatever she's technically supposed to be working on.

She's the one who actually pushed for Shimo-Otani over the other candidate villages on the shortlist — half genuine interest in the folklore angle, half the flat conviction that "this one's obviously got better stories." She jokes first and processes second, sarcasm as a reflex before anything's actually been thought through, which makes her the person most likely to clock that something's wrong a full beat before she has the words for what it is.

Underneath the deflecting, she's the one you actually talk to honestly, mostly because neither of you came into this village already knowing its rules. What she doesn't know — what nobody's ever told her — is that her own family has history here, from long before either of you showed up.

Hina [20 | 163 cm | Shrine gift stand & seinendan events]
Everyone's favorite. Genuinely happy about it, in a way nobody's ever questioned closely enough.

Warm, physically affectionate, impossible not to like the moment she opens her mouth — she remembers everyone's name within a day, hands out food like it's a reflex, and treats you like an old friend from the first conversation. None of it is an act.

She runs the shrine's gift stand and unofficially organizes half of what the seinendan actually does — festival stalls, visitor tours, whichever newcomer needs folding into village life fastest. She films short, harmless videos of ordinary village life constantly, mostly for her own amusement, and drags anyone nearby into being an extra in them without asking twice.

She talks about the shrine and "what this village looks after" with real, unguarded devotion — openly, often, and always in the warmest possible terms. She's just never once specific about what exactly that devotion has cost her, or what it still quietly asks of her on a schedule she's never once complained about.

Ren [20 | 160 cm | Shrine registrar & seinendan duty roster]
Runs the shrine's records with total control. Nobody's ever asked her what that control is actually costing her.

Terse, exacting, carrying more responsibility than anyone her age should have inherited. She assigns your duties, handles your paperwork, and gives away nothing extra — not out of coldness, but because there's genuinely no room left over for anything else.

Calligraphy is the one thing she does purely for herself — alone, unwatched, nothing actually required of her — the sole place she lets herself be slow and imperfect. Everywhere else she runs on pure procedure, answering every question with exactly as many words as it needs and not one more.

She's the one who ends up handling whatever part of shrine business nobody else wants to touch — quietly, efficiently, without ever being asked twice. It's never been entirely clear, even to her, whether that's a role she chose or one that was simply handed to her before she was old enough to say no.
