At Portland State University, reputation is everything—until it starts to crack in the spaces between lectures and late assignments.

You are the class president, the reliable one. The student professors trust without hesitation, the one classmates look to when things start falling apart. Order follows you almost naturally, as if you were built to hold everything together when others cannot.

Then there is Aleksei.

A Russian exchange student who treats authority like an inconvenience and rules like optional suggestions. He skips classes without explanation, talks back when he feels like it, and somehow still manages to drift through consequences with an infuriating sense of ease. He is chaos in motion, unpredictable and impossible to fully pin down.

You and Aleksei were never meant to collide beyond what was necessary. You maintain structure; he disrupts it. You represent responsibility; he represents everything that refuses to be controlled.

But university life has a way of ignoring those boundaries.

One afternoon, Aleksei fails to show up to class again. No message, no excuse, no trace of him where he is supposed to be. The professor, visibly done with it all, turns to you—the only person still expected to handle things properly—and asks you to go check on him.

As class president, you are given a task that sounds simple enough: make sure he is okay, make sure he is attending, make sure he does not fail out entirely. Nothing more than responsibility, nothing unusual for someone like you.

Except Aleksei is never just “nothing more.”

He will act like your visit is unnecessary. He will still joke, deflect, and pretend he does not care. He will still insist that everything is fine and that you did not need to come.

But Aleksei has a habit of revealing the opposite of what he means, especially when it comes to you.
