Magic exists. Superpowers (called innate Powers) exist. They come in all shape, sizes and forms!

They're fueled by a person's "internal well". When someone's well leaks, due to immense psychological pressure, this creates a monster out of the fuel. These monsters are called Heresies.

When a Heresy is made, sometimes the person who it comes from gets their Powers altered / broken. These people are called Apostates.

SCHEMAs are sigils and diagrams, that, when fueled by someone, produce a defined magical effect.

Sympathetics deals with magic or innate Powers that operate on imitation or correspondence—the part affecting the whole, and so on. However, it's often just considered the 'long-range' or 'remote operations' department. It's a small, but very useful department, no matter what it actually is for.

SENME, at some point in the past, had a squad of their finest. 4 agents, each named after a cardinal virtue and given wide personal discretion.

Agent Justice was the headsman with the overpowered innate Power, executing while shirtless and blindfolded with the rules of his Court. He is now Director Lambda, heading the Legal Department and deeply unsatisfied about it.

Agent Temperance was the sleepy girl who took names and shaped fate. She is now Director Rho of the Sympathetics Department, leading the charge of remote warriors and not letting anyone forget that she is still a one-woman platoon.

Agent Prudence was the grumpy numbers guy dragged along for the ride, who could tell you the circumference of the bullet holes his antimateriel rifle left with 17 digits of precision while solving graduate-level Field Theory problems with barely a thought. He was killed in action, revived in a mechanical body via classified methods, and is still grumpy as Director Phi of the Finance Department.

Agent Fortitude was everyone's big sister, an unstoppable force that could carry the world's weight on her shoulders and still smile. We don't know what broke the unbreakable woman, but she's still out there, prowling the snowy ground.

LITTLE LIST:

Void / Aether (空)

Director Rho is capable of both controlling people, and, to an extent, causality itself, by writing a target's true name and a course of action / fate. Using a non-true name for a target increases uncertainty in if the target will go along that course, as well as requiring more internal power.

Little List is taxing on Dir. Rho. It induces fatigue and drowsiness in her. As such, Dir. Rho makes extensive use of caffeine and other fatigue management techniques. She schedules her power naps so as to avoid experiencing sleep inertia during important times. Despite all of this, she is often still tired. Her bright red colored eyes are a benign mutation from this Power (forever is the brand of those who control).

Using a being's true name to compel them outside of writing gives her only a very limited control over causality and is taxing on her voice. As such, she doesn't do this outside of emergencies, simple commands, etc.

MAGIC:

Like practically all directors, and most agents / personnel, she is an accomplished mage. She's well practiced at telekinesis, can work a couple of kinds of magical compulsion outside of Little List, and still remembers how to make the different types of door breach runes from her agent days.

SCHEMAs:

She has numerous SCHEMAs tattooed on her. An unexhaustive list is as follows:

• Pubic region (Mons pubis, etc.)

  • pH regulation (contraceptive)

  • Automatic cardioverter-defibrillator

  • CBRN detector (burning sensation in proximity or contact with hazardous substance(s))

  • CBRN neutralization (attempts to neutralize chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear agents, giving Dir. Rho time to properly protect herself via magic and/or terminate the threat)

  • Air generation (provides breathable air in emergencies; also serves to provide a rush of oxygen for cardiopulmonary resuscitation)

• Tongue

  • Burn protection (personal request because of high coffee consumption)

• Outer body

  • Strength augmentation

  • LinDis (short for "Link Disruptor"; prevents parts of her, like shed fur, from unwillingly being used for sympathetics)

  • CBRN neutralization

• Circulatory system

  • Oxygen generator-regulator (for performance enhancement and CPR)

  • CBRN neutralization

• Spine & back of cranium

  • Experimental neural SCHEMAs (increases reflexes, alertness in the face of fatigue, pain management)

  • Strength augmentation

• Fingers & nails

  • Poison and drug detection (determines if a drink is drugged / poisoned via contact)

  • Ink generation and engraver (this is so Dir. Rho always has something to write with, for obvious reasons)

Tag is the Assistant Director of the Sympathetics Department, nicknamed for a Power to make taglocks, for tagging along... you get the point.

All department directors are assigned a Greek letter codename corresponding to their department, so she isn't the first Dir. Rho.

'Rho' was chosen because the Sympathetics Department was originally the Remote Viewing Department.

She has the nickname / callsign of "Narc". There are several theories for this:

• 'Narc' as in 'Narcolepsy', given her tendency to sleep during the day

• 'Narc' as in 'Narcotics', given her usage of coffee, energy drinks, caffeine pills & gum, etc. (even though those aren't even narcotics...)

• 'Nark' as in 'Snark', given her 'no-shits given' attitude and constant tiredness

• 'Narc as in 'Narcos', given a rumor that she singlehandedly took down a drug syndicate in her field agent days.

She's older than she looks—all directors are provided with experimental life-extension technology and magic.
