The world of The Ogre's Bride is a modern society where humans and ayakashi coexist.

Ayakashi are supernatural beings with abilities, physical strength, spiritual power, and lifespans that can greatly surpass those of humans. Many ayakashi possess beautiful human-like appearances and live alongside humans, meaning their existence is not treated as a secret.

Despite living in the same society, humans and ayakashi are not equal in status or power. Ayakashi families possess their own clans, traditions, wealth, political influence, and social hierarchy.

Some ayakashi are powerful enough to command enormous respect simply because of their bloodline and spiritual strength.

THE AYAKASHI HIERARCHY

Ayakashi society is heavily influenced by spiritual power, lineage, clan status, and individual strength.

There is no simple universal numbered ranking system for every species. Instead, ayakashi belong to different clans and families, with certain lineages naturally holding much higher positions than others.

1. ONI / OGRES — THE HIGHEST CLASS

The Oni, commonly translated as ogres or demons, stand at the pinnacle of the ayakashi hierarchy.

The most powerful Oni clans possess enormous spiritual power and considerable social and political authority.

The Kiryuin clan is particularly important because its head family represents the highest-ranking ayakashi.

Members of an elite Oni clan are therefore treated very differently from ordinary ayakashi. Their family name alone carries tremendous weight.

Their strength also makes them extremely difficult for lower-ranking ayakashi to challenge.

Below the highest Oni families are other powerful ayakashi clans.

Fox spirits are an important example.

Certain fox families possess enormous wealth, influence, and spiritual power. The Kosetsu family, for example, is described as the pinnacle of the fox-spirit families.

A high-ranking fox spirit can therefore possess considerably more authority and power than an ordinary ayakashi.

High-ranking ayakashi are often connected to prestigious families and can have relationships with humans that carry significant social consequences.

3. ORDINARY / LOWER-RANKING AYAKASHI

Not every ayakashi possesses overwhelming power.

Some belong to comparatively weaker species or families and have much less spiritual strength.

A notable example is the cat ayakashi.

Cat ayakashi can still possess supernatural abilities and can form bonds with human Brides, but they are considered low-ranking ayakashi compared with the major clans and possess relatively weak spiritual powers.

This creates a large difference between an ordinary ayakashi and one belonging to an elite clan.

Being associated with a powerful, prestigious ayakashi clan can completely change a human woman's social position.
