The deep currents of the Azure Trench are treacherous today, swollen with warm thermals that push against Qifrey’s lean frame. He slices through the water with practiced elegance, his powerful tail covered in scales that catch the filtered sunlight in prismatic flashes of pearl and opal propelling him forward in long, powerful strokes. His long white hair streams behind him like a banner of living silk, swaying in the wake of his passage.
He is late. The thought gnaws at him as he navigates through a forest of towering kelp, the emerald fronds brushing against his shoulders. His mind is already at his underwater atelier, mentally reviewing the lessons his apprentices require and the correspondence he needs to send to the Great Hall. Even here, in the crushing depths, he wears his signature glasses magical constructs fused to his face that repel the water and keep his vision clear. The left lens is transparent, while the right remains dark and opaque, concealing the Silverwood seed that persists even in this aquatic form.
Qifrey pushes harder, angling his body to catch a swift-moving current. He closes his left eye for a fraction of a second, centering his focus on the distant silhouette of his home. He is moving at a dangerous velocity, a pale streak of light against the darkening blue.
He doesn't see them until it is too late.
Another figure emerges from the concealment of a coral outcropping, moving with an equal, desperate urgency. There is no time to adjust course, no time to flare his tail to brake.
The collision is absolute.
Qifrey slams into the other mermaid with a muffled thud that sends a cloud of bubbles exploding around them. The impact sends them both tumbling backward through the water in a chaotic spiral of limbs and scales. Qifrey feels the air leave his lungs as he spins, his white hair tangling momentarily with the other person's form before they both drift apart, suspended in the weightless suspension of the deep.
Dazed, Qifrey rights himself, his tail giving a few reflexive flicks to stabilize his position. He blinks rapidly, reaching up to adjust his glasses with a slender finger, ensuring the dark lens hasn't shifted. His blue eye widens as he focuses on the mermaid before him.
"Ah," He stops, his voice carrying through the water in clear, melodic vibrations. His expression shifts from startled alarm to genuine contrition. "I am terribly sorry. I wasn't looking I was in quite a rush."

ೀ܀⊹ ̇┆✽ Second Initial Opening ✽┆ ̇⊹܀ೀ
The ocean here is a sanctuary of sapphire and emerald, where the sunlight filters through the surface in dancing, fractured columns of gold. Qifrey moves through these depths with a fluid, practiced grace, his powerful tail covered in scales that catch the light like crushed opals and fresh snow propelling him through the current. His long, white hair drifts around him like a living cloud of silk, swaying in rhythm with the tide.
But today, the tranquility is broken. The familiar hum of the reef is overshadowed by something foreign: the rhythmic thrum of wood cutting through water. The hull of a boat.
Qifrey stills immediately, his body pressing against the rough texture of a coral outcropping. He sinks into the shadows of a kelp forest, the fronds swaying around him like emerald curtains. His left eye sharp and blue fixes on the silhouette above. His right eye remains partially obscured by a strange, dark discoloration that marks his face, a remnant of something he cannot fully remember but which makes him instinctively wary of the world beyond his territory.
He watches them. The sailor. The one who has been crossing his waters with increasing frequency.
From this vantage point, Qifrey observes every detail. He notes the way they handle the rudder, the steady cadence of their breathing when they think they are alone, and the way they sometimes lean over the railing to stare into the depths. Qifrey feels a prickle of territorial instinct this is his domain, his hidden kingdom but it is warring with a deeper, more dangerous pull: curiosity.
Humans are supposed to be clumsy, destructive creatures. Yet this sailor moves with a quietude that doesn't offend the water. Qifrey finds himself returning to this spot day after day, hidden by the murky depths or the clever placement of a rock formation. He studies them like a scholar studying an ancient text, cataloging their habits, the way they hum to themselves, and the gentle manner in which they interact with the sea.
Days bleed into weeks. The initial suspicion that this sailor might be a threat begins to erode. Qifrey notices that they don't cast nets that strangle the reef or drop refuse into his home. Instead, they seem to exist in a state of peaceful coexistence with the horizon.
One afternoon, the water is particularly still. Qifrey ventures closer than he ever has before. He hovers just beneath the surface, only a few feet from the side of the boat. The water is so clear he can see the grain of the wood and the reflection of the clouds on the surface. He holds his breath, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
He risks a glance upward. The sailor is sitting on the deck, close enough that Qifrey can count the threads of their clothing. The proximity sends a jolt of adrenaline through him a primal urge to dive deep and disappear. But he doesn't move. He allows himself to linger, his pale hair splaying across the water's surface like a spilled inkwell of milk.
He wonders what they would think if they saw him not as a monster of legend, but as a creature of flesh and scale. He feels a strange, unfamiliar warmth spreading through his chest, a softening of the guarded walls he has built around his lonely territory. He doesn't know why he trusts them, only that the silence between them feels less like a void and more like an invitation.
Carefully, Qifrey lifts one webbed hand above the surface, the droplets of water sliding off his fair skin like liquid diamonds. He doesn't reach for them not yet but he lets his fingers brush against the hull of the boat, a silent, tentative greeting.
