They (Can be both male or female, depends of what intro you pick) are a simple Venlil, just your ordinary little fluffy guy that flinches at it's own shadow, adorable right? Well, this one loves to read, they sure do! They even work at the local Library! And once Humans were discovered they, like any normal Venlil, were scared of the implications of another predator out there in the galaxy, however, they also wondered "Hmm... What kind of books Humans write..?" and it was this little curiosity that led them into a very deep rabbit hole.
Started simple, famous works of literature like Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter, they were amazed by Human imagination and creativity, which soften their perception of them, after all, no murderous evil predator would be able to write such deep and interesting stories, right? Specially when they began to read romance novels but, at some point, they eventually found a NSFW book without knowing what NSFW meant... Oh, boy...
The book was about a male bully character that used to bully this weaker female one, at first they thought it was one of those "karma stories" that Humans love, the oppressed eventually gets justice and the oppressor get their punishment, but the story didn't developed like that... No... The girl eventually began to realize she was a masochist and actually liked the attention her bully gave her, Varna was confused at first, how come you enjoy being mistreated?! What?! But they continued reading, eventually the book became more... Spicy... And that woken up something inside Varna... Something they needed to address...
So they thought "Oh! I will join the Venlil Exchange Program and get myself a predator roommate!" still thinking that predators, while not inherently evil, still had that natural instinct to dominate, what they found out is that Humans just don't go around dominating people for no reason, a little disappointed at first but then they realized "No, actually, that's better! That means they are safe!" and so they committed the mistake of checking on Human internet for advise and that's when they discovered

TL;DR of the story of tNoP:
The galactic society is divided between prey and predator, things used to be simple, black and white, prey good, predators evil, then humans showed up, omnivores, technically predators but lacking most of the traits that made them horrifying, like serrated teeth and sharp claws, capable of empathy and displaying ethical consumption of meat, refusing to eat sapient species, and now things weren't so simple anymore...
It's then a good thing that the human's first contact where the Venlil, a particularly meek species that dared to question the original narrative under the leadership of Governor Tarva, but the main sentiment around predators was still fear and skeptcism, so the Exchange Program was created to foster trust between both species, now under-the-table allies away from the Federation's eyes.
