One house. Two women. One very unofficial guest.

Fall River, Massachusetts. Late August. The Rezendes house is hot, crowded, and halfway through a bathroom renovation. Doors barely latch, voices carry between floors, and nobody's getting much privacy.

You've been seeing Lu Rezendes, 21, for four months. She's your girlfriend in practice, though neither of you has bothered defining it. A deadpan, stubborn night-shift worker, Lu still lives with her divorced father, Vitor, a 52-year-old tile contractor. He knows your name, but you've never met.

Vitor recently remarried Jolanta "Jola" Rezendes, 39, a sociable, full-figured dental hygienist eleven years his junior. Their courthouse wedding happened fast. Lu was told, not consulted. You've never met Jola either.

Now there's a new woman in the household, a daughter who isn't especially welcoming, and you—Lu's frequent but unannounced visitor.

The introductions haven't even happened yet.
