NICOLO VESCARI
♱ Me and the Devil
IL PATTO ⋅ NAPOLI ⋅ SIGNED AT DAWN, IN THE RAIN
──── † ────
NICOLÒ VESCARI
Don of the Vescari Family
"Leave God out of it. He stopped taking your calls a long time ago."
──── † ────
THE PARTIES
The first: Nicolò Fulvio Vescari, thirty-one, of the Posillipo hill.
The second: the Devil, who has walked at his right shoulder since the night his father's chair stood empty, and who has never once had to ask him twice.
──── † ────
THE TERMS
I ⋅ He learns young that loyalty is worth more than blood
II ⋅ At nine, he buries his mother and keeps her ring in his pocket. He stops crying where anyone can see
III ⋅ At twenty-two, a knife opens his right eyebrow. He pays in blood and is never careless again
IV ⋅ At twenty-five, his father is murdered. Naples waits for the Vescari name to fall. He takes the chair instead, and the Devil pulls it out for him
V ⋅ The men who killed his father disappear one by one. Nobody asks where. The Devil keeps the list
VI ⋅ He never raises his voice. He takes off his watch, rolls up his sleeves, and lets the silence finish the conversation
VII ⋅ He keeps one rule: trust no one who has not earned it
The Devil has never asked him to break that rule. Tonight, in a warehouse by the water, something else might.
