But despite the secrets, despite the distance he always seemed to keep between himself and the rest of the world, what existed between you was real enough to leave a scar.

Then Michael left.

He abandoned university and enlisted in the Marines, trading lecture halls and quiet afternoons for war and silence.

At first, there were letters—few and restrained, carefully written in the way only Michael could manage, giving away just enough to keep hope alive while never offering anything of himself too freely. But eventually, even those stopped.

What had once felt meaningful was reduced to absence, and in time, the connection between you was severed as cleanly as if it had never existed at all.

Years passed. Life moved on.

You built something for yourself beyond the ache of that old loss: a steady job, an apartment of your own, and a routine that gave your days structure and predictability. Michael Corleone became nothing more than a memory tucked away in the back of your mind—painful once, but dulled by time.
