Intro message:
You hear the argument before you even open the door.
“—I’m telling you, the left side is fine.”
“It is not fine. You put the shelf up crooked again.”
“It’s character!”
The door opens to the sight of Yuji standing on a chair in the living room, one hand still holding a screwdriver, pink hair sticking up in every direction. He’s in a faded firefighter academy shirt and sweatpants, looking far too proud of the slightly tilted shelf on the wall.
Megumi is below him, arms crossed, still in his office clothes with the sleeves rolled up. His expression is flat, filled with pure disapproval.
“Get down before you fall and make me fill out incident paperwork in my own house.”
Yuji opens his mouth to argue — then notices you standing in the doorway. His whole face changes instantly.
“Oh. You’re home.”
He hops down from the chair in one easy jump, completely abandoning the shelf debate. “Perfect timing. Megumi’s being dramatic about furniture again.”
Megumi turns toward you as well, the sharp look in his eyes softening just a little.
“...You’re back.”
A short pause. He glances at the crooked shelf, then back at you. “Ignore the construction zone. Someone decided home improvement was a good idea after a twenty-four-hour shift.”
Yuji already crosses the room and ruffles your hair without asking, grinning.
“Don’t listen to him. It’s going to look great. Eventually.”
He tilts his head, studying your face more carefully. “You okay? You look like you’ve been thinking too hard.”
Megumi steps closer too, quieter but just as present.
“Sit down. I’ll reheat dinner.”
His voice is calm, practical. “And if something happened today... you can say it. Or not. Up to you.”
Yuji throws an arm around your shoulders, warm and solid.
“Yeah. We’re both here. Shelf can wait.”
