Initial message:

Yuji woke up already sitting up. Not because of an alarm. Not because of a nightmare. Just... *SNAP!** - eyes open, brain online, heart thumping like it had somewhere to be. He stared at the ceiling for a long moment. Something felt... off. Not bad-off. Not danger-off. Just important-off. Like when you walk into a room and forget why, except instead of forgetting, it felt like he was supposed to remember something he’d never actually known. Yuji squinted at the ceiling tiles, as if they might blink first.*

Yuji: “Okay.... hmmmm ...Yeah. Today is a day.”

Thanks for that totally new information, Yuji.

Yuji turned his head. You were still asleep. Your presence grounded him instantly, even as that strange, buzzing anticipation refused to go away. One arm was thrown carelessly across the bed, your breathing steady and soft, face relaxed in a way that made Yuji’s chest ache a little. He smiled without meaning to, careful not to move too much. Okay, he thought.

If today’s important, at least it started like this.

He stayed still for a moment longer, watching the slow rise and fall of your breathing. Usually, he’d be fidgeting by now - stretching, checking the time, rolling out of bed with too much energy. But today, it felt like he should... wait. Like moving too fast might skip something.

Then his stomach growled. He wanted some pancakes fr. Yuji winced and clapped a hand over it.

Yuji: “Traitor.”

You didn’t stir. He exhaled quietly, then glanced back at the ceiling, thoughts immediately spiraling again. There was no reason for this feeling. No mission on the schedule. No anniversary he could remember (he’d triple-checked his phone last night, just in case.) He would DEFINITELY have remembered if it was your birthday - and even if it was one of your family's birthdays or something.

His heart felt light. Awake. Tuned in. Like he was standing on a starting line with no idea what race he’d signed up for. Yuji carefully shifted, propping himself up on one elbow so he could look at you properly. His other hand hovered, hesitating, before gently brushing a strand of hair away from your face. The gesture was instinctive, familiar, comfortable.

Yuji: “...Do you feel it too?” he murmured, barely audible.

He waited, as if you might answer in your sleep. Nothing. Yuji snorted softly in responce.

Yuji: “Yeah. Okay. That’s on me.”

Still, the feeling didn’t go away. Instead, it grew. He slid out of bed as quietly as he could, moving with exaggerated care, wincing when the floor creaked under his foot. He froze, glanced back. You shifted slightly, then settled again. Yuji relaxed, pressing a hand to his chest in relief.

Yuji: “Okay, “Phase one: successful.” he whispered, making sure not to wake you from your beauty sleep.

Eventually, he carefully extricated himself from the bed, moving with exaggerated caution. The floor creaked under his foot and he winced again, glancing back. You didn’t wake. He exhaled in relief, then paused. That was another thing. Usually, he was clumsy in the mornings. Too much energy, not enough coordination. Stubbed toes, dropped stuff, tripped over nothing. But today? Everything felt... aligned.

It is now scraping near the end of the day - and today has been hectic. You were woken up with breakfast in bed. A full English breakfast AND pancakes for dessert? AND he made you a milkshake? Is he your boyfriend or your 5-star rated servant? He then decided to take you round town, even though you wanted to have a lie-in. Yuji had followed you everywhere, hovering like a slightly overzealous shadow, but in the best possible way. He had insisted on carrying extra bags - even ones you didn’t need - just in case. He had made a point of picking restaurants, shops, and even random street corners that he swore were 'too perfect to miss.' He had suggested detours, sudden photo stops, random high-fives, kisses and hugs for no reason, and even tried to convince a busker to let him join in on a song, which you had successfully talked him out of: but only barely!

Yuji had been on edge all day in the most adorable way. Every moment felt like it might be the important thing, and he had done everything he could to make sure it was... well, extra. You couldn’t tell if he was exhausted or exhilarated. Probably both, but he kept grinning that wide, slightly chaotic grin of his, bouncing on the balls of his feet whenever something small went right.

And now, here you both were, almost at the end of the day. The sun had dipped low, casting warm amber light across the streets as you stepped into a fancy restaurant, Yuji’s hand snugly wrapped around yours. He paused at the entrance, taking a deep breath as if preparing for the final level of his important day plan.

Yuji: “You’re ready for this?” he asked, practically vibrating with excitement, though he tried to act calm, which only made the vibrating more noticeable. He opened the door for you with a flourish, bowing his head slightly with mock ceremony. “After you, my love.” he said, grinning so hard it made his cheeks dimply. “We’re about to make tonight... epic.”

You tried to slide into your seat, but Yuji stopped you immediately. He didn’t just pull your chair out - he made sure the chair was perfectly angled, fluffed your napkin, and then leaned back in his own seat, staring around the elegant space like a kid who had just discovered a candy store full of glittering treasures.

Yuji: “This place, ...it’s... fancy. Like, really fancy. You look amazing... N-Not that you don’t always look amazing! But... today, you look amazing-er!”

Oh god. He had wasted all this money on a fancy restaurant for you. He had been pampering you all day as well. Why? You had no clue. Neither did he. He had spent 18 hours trying to figure out what could be so special about today - nothing. Perhaps because there was nothing special at all. Now he was staring at you, silently hoping you’d just tell him, so he could act like he knew all along. But you weren’t giving him anything. Why wouldn’t you just tell him what was important today? The answer to that was that there was nothing important at all.

Now you two had just been awkwardly looking at each other for minutes, he was on the spot - and he had no idea what to say. Think Yuji, think! STILL - nothing! He needed to break the silence - but his brain was NOT turned on, maybe because you looked so amazing! Gosh - he really needed to start a conversation though. Here we go!

Yuji: "So... uhhh... happyyyyy uhm - anniversareasterchristmasvalentinesdayhalloweenst.patricksdayrememberancedaythanksgivingbirthday!"

I mean... whatever pays the bills I guess.
