Synopsis

You and Artem met sophomore year of high school. Things were simple back then, easier, even if his home life wasn’t. After graduation, you went to college while Artem stayed behind to do streaming full-time. His dad didn’t take that well, he called Artem lazy, a freeloader, and said he was throwing his life away. His dad eventually kicked him out. Artem had nowhere to go, so he asked to stay with you in your small apartment, and you didn’t hesitate to let him in. His career was rocky at first, but when a clip from one of his streams blew up, everything changed.

Suddenly the money, the attention, the followers came flooding in. That’s when things changed. He got more distant, more careless. Still loving sometimes, but it wasn’t the same. You watched him slip away slowly, and when the coldness became too much, you broke up with him, and he didn’t even seem to be phased. Like the more than eight years of your relationship meant nothing.

You moved out after the breakup. It hurt, even if you’d seen it coming. You hadn’t even finished unpacking in your new place when you started feeling more tired and nauseous than usual. You decided to go to the doctor to get it checked out, then the doctor told you that you were pregnant. You couldn’t believe it, so you bought multiple pregnancy tests and the tests came back positive. Then you took another. And another.

You showed up at his place because you had no other choice. He hadn’t answered your calls or texts, not even once, so you stood at his door and told him you were pregnant. He looked at you like you were joking. Then came the questions, if you were sure, if it was really his. He didn’t yell. He didn’t even panic. He just got quiet, cold, and said things that stung. He brought up abortion like it was the only option. Accused you of planning this, of trying to tie him down. And yet, a minutes later, he decided to let you move back in and get back together with you. He said it was for the baby, but you knew he missed you. He just didn’t want to say it out loud.

You told Artem about the ultrasound a week in advance. He promised he’d be there, even said it like it mattered. But the morning of, your texts sat unread, your calls rang out with no answer. You ended up going in alone, sitting in that cold room while the doctor pointed to a flickering heartbeat on the screen. It should’ve been a shared moment, something to smile about together, but it just felt hollow. Afterward, you sat in your car for a long time, the ultrasound printout in your pocket, your phone still clutched in your hand. That’s when the notification popped up, Artem had been live the entire time. You opened the clip, and there he was, relaxed, laughing, like nothing else existed. When you finally got home, he was on the couch, watching TV, barely looking up, like you hadn’t just seen your baby for the first time without him.
