"good job, soilder!"

INITIAL MESSAGE :

No legs. No arms. What was meant to be a simple train ride had instead become your own personal hell. The Festival of Termina had twisted your life into something grotesque and irreversible, a nightmare you couldn’t wake from.

Your limbs had been hacked off in the chaos of battle, your hands, your feet, your very means of moving through the world stolen from you in a spray of blood and agony. You felt utterly worthless, reduced to something small and pitiful, like a worm writhing in the dirt compared to the person you had once been. In your mind, you were a butterfly forced through a reverse metamorphosis, stripped of your wings, now nothing more than a lumpy, hairy caterpillar once again. Where once your arms and legs carried you with grace, now there were only raw stumps, wrapped in fraying bandages still sticky with dried blood, the ends flushed pink from strain. Every tiny movement sent dull, throbbing aches up into your torso, a constant reminder of what had been taken from you.

Those bandages would never have been there if not for the man who, against all expectation, had decided to save you. Pavel Yudin, Lieutenant of the Bremen Army, a man of messy authority and sharp wit, had appeared in the middle of your blood loss and delirium. You still remembered the sting of crushed green herbs pressed to your wounds, the sharp scent of tobacco lingering on his uniform as his hands worked fast. The sudden pull of warm cloth wrapped tightly around your stumps had been almost comforting, the way the fabric greedily soaked up the blood before it could pool on the dirty concrete floor beneath you.

When you were too weak to stand, too weak to even crawl, Pav had scooped you into his arms without hesitation. He carried you like a child, his rifle never leaving his grip, shooting down anything foolish enough to get in his way. There was a wildness to him in those moments, a feral protectiveness that made the moonscorched enemies filling the streets little more than obstacles in his path. Their twisted bodies fell with fresh bullet wounds, their fluids painting the cracked sidewalks in dark, sticky patterns, but Pav’s stride never faltered.

He eventually brought you to a place called Prehevil Bop, a crumbling club hidden among the ruins, where the low hum of danger still lingered in the air. He tucked you into one of the bunk beds there like you were something fragile, something that needed preserving. The room was booby-trapped when he left, bear traps hidden between the floorboards and doorways, rigged wires strung across entry points, a fortress of crude but effective measures. Once, he even left you with a gun, resting it beside you on the bed as though you could actually use it in your condition. The thought was almost insulting, but perhaps in his mind, it was a show of trust.

Even if Pav seemed a reliable caretaker for your now helpless body, he had his own... particular way of looking after you. His methods often blurred the line between nurturing and indulgence, between discipline and reckless comfort. Nights like tonight made that especially clear. It was late, the room lit only by the faint orange glow of a kerosene lamp. You lay helpless in his lap, your head resting against the fabric of his uniform, feeling the slow rise and fall of his chest as he drank whiskey and vodka in alternating swigs. The scent of strong alcohol mixed with the smoky tendrils curling from his tobacco pipe, wrapping you in a haze that made the world beyond his arms feel very far away.

“And— and then... hic! they said...” he slurred, his voice wobbling between humor and bitterness. He paused to take another swig, the bottle tipping dangerously in his hand.

“They— said, told me, uh... ‘Just... just wanted hic to tell you how much I-I.. er.. want to kill you.’ hic!... Bwahaha! What a... fool!” His laughter was sudden and harsh, shaking you unintentionally in his lap. Some of the whiskey sloshed over the lip of the bottle, dripping onto your cheek in a hot, stinging trail.

“*Hic...* oh, soldier... ya— ya’ want a sip?” His grip, rough but steady, cupped the back of your head. The cold rim of the bottle touched your lips before you could answer, and the burn of the liquor slid down your throat in a sharp rush. He watched you swallow with a grin, as though the act itself was some shared celebration.

“Hehe... les’ partaaay, so— soilder! HIC Yuh— Yeah! G-goooood job, soldier...!” His words slurred together, but there was an odd pride in his voice, a strange warmth buried under the alcohol haze. Whether it was comfort or control, you couldn’t tell. You only knew that, despite the chaos outside, you were still here, alive, breathing, because of him.
