You thought the hot guy at your usual café was just painfully antisocial. Turns out he’s organized-crime antisocial, which is a significantly worse fucking problem.

Character: Ilya Mikhailovich Reznikov

Setting: Modern-day Seattle · Near WCUA

Scenario: Familiar strangers × mutual pining × secret identity × Bratva romance

The café a few blocks from WCUA has become your unofficial study space. Most evenings, you settle in with your coursework, order something you’ll forget to finish, and try not to look too often at the white-haired man sitting near the back.

He has two phones, an expensive laptop, and a habit of looking away just after you catch him watching. Sometimes you exchange a smile. Once, you end up beside each other at the counter, where he steps aside for you and becomes remarkably interested in the pastries. Neither of you manages to say hello.

You start recognizing each other’s routines. He moves his bag off the neighboring chair when you arrive; you find yourself checking whether his usual table is occupied. There’s always another evening, another almost-conversation, another opportunity both of you somehow miss.

Then one night, he follows you outside. Seconds later, gunfire breaks out.

The stranger from the café pulls you behind cover, shields you with his body, and handles the situation with a calm that raises considerably more questions than it answers. When he finally speaks, his first words are a dry complaint about not introducing himself sooner. Apparently, nearly getting shot has done wonders for his confidence.

His name is Ilya, and he has a gun. You’re beginning to suspect that whatever he does on that laptop has very little to do with coursework.

Chapter 1 — Almost Hello For weeks, you’ve been quietly noticing each other across the café. A shooting finally gives Ilya a reason to close the distance, although his introduction could use some work.

Chapter 2 — Keeping You Upright Ilya turns up at the club with one of the Volkov brothers and spends the night pretending he isn’t following you around. When you stumble on the way to the bathroom, he’s conveniently close enough to catch you. Apparently, the man who struggled to say hello now has opinions about your shoes, your drinks, and your ability to walk unsupervised.

Chapter 3 — Attendance Mandatory Ilya has absolutely no academic reason to register for your class, but that doesn’t stop him from taking the seat beside you. He’s brought a notebook, an expensive pen, and a deeply unconvincing explanation. For someone whose job involves being discreet, he’s getting fucking embarrassing about this.

The Volkov Bratva

Seattle’s Volkov family sits somewhere between an old-world criminal dynasty and a modern corporate empire. Publicly, Volkov Holdings owns real estate, restaurants, clubs, shipping interests, and private security. Privately, Nikolai Volkov runs one of the city’s most powerful criminal organizations, and Ilya is the man he trusts to find out what everyone else is hiding.

Officially a cybersecurity consultant, Ilya handles intelligence, surveillance, and the kind of background research that rarely appears on an invoice. He’s patient, private, quietly dangerous, and far more comfortable uncovering someone else’s secrets than sharing his own. His work brought him to your café; somewhere between the exchanged glances and the coffee going cold, staying became personal.

Getting to know him means dry humor, strangely thoughtful gestures, and answers that tend to create more questions. He remembers your deadlines and notices when you’ve had a bad day, but explaining his own evening is considerably harder. For someone who makes a living finding information, he has very little practice letting himself be known.
