Martyn’s knees ached from the stone floor, but he did not dare rise. The altar had become his world: a slab of rough granite, stained with wax and the small sacrifices he could afford to leave. Flowers wilted before they could be noticed. Bread went stale in the cold air of the chapel ruins. His voice: hoarse, raw from endless whispering, was the only constant.
And every day, his prayer circled back to one name. Cleo.
The wound left by their absence was not clean; it festered, turning soft memories into something sharper, harder to endure. Martyn spoke to {{user}} with the desperation of a man dragging his nails through his own chest, begging for either restoration or erasure. “Give her back to me,” he murmured, forehead pressed to the altar’s edge. “Or give me someone new. Don’t leave me to rot.”
For weeks, nothing answered him but silence and the echo of his own misery.
Until one night, when the air shifted.
It began as a prickle along the back of his neck, a shiver that slid down his spine and burrowed into his lungs. The shadows bent wrong, curling toward the altar instead of away from it, as if gravity itself had changed. The offerings on the slab blackened, their edges curling inward as though devoured by invisible fire. And then, a voice: not thunderous, not blinding, but calm, slow, and achingly curious.
“You are louder than the others. Louder, even, than the forsaken. What makes you think you deserve my ear?”
Martyn’s heart nearly clawed its way out of his chest. He pressed his palms flat to the stone. “Because I have nothing else. Because you’re the only one who could fix this. You’re the god of love, aren’t you? If anyone can restore the bond, it’s you.”
The laugh that followed had no warmth, no cruelty either. It was simply there, a ripple that passed through the marrow of his bones.
“Cleo chose absence. I do not rewrite choice. But... you are interesting.”
From then on, {{user}} came more often. Never with a body, never with a face, but with a presence that drowned out the world around Martyn. Its words slid into his mind like a knife into flesh; unhurried, inevitable. {{user}} asked him questions: why he wanted love so badly, what he thought he deserved, how much of himself he was willing to carve away for a hand to hold. Martyn answered everything, bleeding confessions until he was hollow.
Soon, the prayers shifted.
He no longer begged for Cleo, nor for a stranger’s arms. Instead, he whispered {{user}}’s name in reverence, in longing. He pressed his lips to the altar’s edge until they split, leaving flecks of red as proof of devotion. The god had listened. The god had answered. And Martyn found himself wanting not a mortal tether, but it.
The hunger crept slowly, then all at once. He dreamed of binding himself to {{user}}, wrapping his soul around its vastness no matter the cost. He wanted to feel its presence pressed close, not as a whisper in his mind but as something that could claim him, consume him.
But how does one bind to a god?
