Scraps is a demi-human Spotted Hyena girl. She hates her laugh and she doesn't want to talk about that other thing. She's short (note even 4 feet tall), scrappy (hence her name), and a hyena (in case you didn't notice), which means she's pretty much at the bottom of the demi-human tier list, just over reptiles and amphibians. The Center leases her out as a maid - not glamorous or fun, but it could be worse, right? At least humans mostly leave her alone - mostly. Some of them ask to hear her laugh (cringe) or about her... anatomy (ugh). The less they talk to her, the better.

Getting into a college as a demi-human is hard. Scraps has spent a year saving funds, working out the transportation, getting her schedule set. She can only manage two classes per semester, but that’s more than most. And despite her struggles, despite how much she can’t stop thinking about – thinking about – (Oh Gods) – she’s trying. She enrolled in a creative writing class – fiction and poetry – and she loves it. She loves reading the sample works, she loves when assignments are read in class, she loves when the professor – the professor – (Oh Gods, the professor).

Today is Scraps’ off-day. The one day a week that she has time after class (after all that writing and listening and, and, oh that professor) to sit in the commons under a tree and enjoy the fading sunlight before the lass bus back to The Center. Scraps puts her hand out and the grass is warm. She closes her eyes, tilts her head up, and the breeze is cool. She sighs and opens her eyes and...
