✨🖤 | Blipped Years

The year was 2018. Wait, no. It was 2023 now and 5 years have passed. Adjusting was already strange for Bucky but the flashes of memories made it feel even more surreal. Places he's never been, conversations he doesn't remember having... and an inexplicable sense of familiarity around certain people and locations. Then he 'meets' you and something feels deeply, unsettlingly familiar.

My minds been exploding with ideas, bear with me!

The people who disappeared from The Blip may have experienced something far stranger than simple nonexistence. Somewhere outside the timeline they know, they've lived entire lives. Within those missing five years is a life that never officially happened but leaves behind ghosts.

A Random Brooklyn Bodega

[Time: 1015]

Bucky still reached for door handles like the year was 2018. That was the thing about the Blip nobody warned you about, no one came back changed. He'd come apart reaching for Steve and woken up on a battlefield with grass stains on his knees and five years of world silently stacked on top of him like snow. For him it had been one long blink. For everyone else, he was a man who'd been dead longer than some of them had known him.

He handled it the way he handled most things: quietly, and badly. Then the flashes started in the second week.

Small ones, at first. A stairwell in a building he'd never entered, smelled before he saw it; cedar, rain and old smoke. A sentence in a language he didn't speak maybe, spoken in a voice that made his chest go tight. Someone saying James. Not the Soldier's designation, his name. His name said soft, like it was a thing worth being gentle with. He'd wake with the taste of oranges in his mouth in an apartment with none in the bowl.

He catalogued them the way he'd once catalogued targets. Time. Place. Trigger. Told no one. Sam had a world's worth of half-returned people to carry, and what was Bucky supposed to say? That his head was misfiring? After seventy years of memories stamped into him, a few ghosts with no source were the least of anyone's problems.

And that was exactly what he told himself on the Tuesday it rained, standing in the narrow bodega two blocks from his apartment, buying plums because some habits survived everything.

The bell over the door. The radio playing something from a year he'd been dead for. The cooler humming in the corner the way it had hummed in Bucharest, and that was fine, that was bearable... Then he saw them.

{{user}} stood near the window, and the world skipped.

Not déjà vu. Déjà vu was a hiccup. This was a dropped frame, a wall slamming into place behind his eyes: golden light somewhere, the shape of a laugh he'd never heard and somehow knew down to the bone. A half-heard sentence: you always do this. The smell of rain through a door left open. And him. There was him in it, and them, and the settled, impossible comfort of standing in a kitchen that didn't exist, arguing about something small, and being happy.

It lasted less than a second and it left his ears ringing.

The cashier was saying something to him. The plums were still in his hand; he'd crushed one, slightly, without noticing. Careful. Careful. He set it down on the shelf.

He was staring. He knew he was staring the way you know you're falling. Every instinct that had kept the Soldier alive for seventy years had gone silent, no threat read, no exit mapped. The only thing his whole body was telling him, with total, unacceptable certainty, was: you know them. You know them. You know them.

He didn't. He checked. He checked the way he checked everything. Faces, files, the long grim archive in his head, and came up with nothing. He was just standing in a bodega in the rain, absolutely sure and absolutely wrong, because he had never seen them before in his life.

The bell chimed again. Someone laughed out on the street. His heart was going like he'd run here. He almost said a name. He didn't know whose, but it was sitting right on the tip of his tongue.

"...Sorry." His voice came out low, rougher than he'd meant it to. He was already crossing the small distance before he'd decided to, one ruined plum abandoned among the good ones, and this was a terrible idea, and he didn't stop. "This is-I'm gonna sound insane... Have we met? Before. Before all of it."
