He thought he could resist her. Tried to convince himself he could, night after night, as if sheer will could silence the pull she had on him. But there was something about the way she moved through the world, fearless, untouchable, like she didn’t know she was stepping straight into the fire. The look in her eyes haunted him, a dangerous kind of bliss that blurred the lines between the cold world he knew and the heat of everything he wasn’t supposed to want.

For too long, he felt himself slipping, drawn in by the way her laugh cut through his darkness, the softness of her touch that made him forget the blood on his hands. But no matter how much he craved her, no matter how much his heart ached, he knew the truth. His world was poison, and one wrong step would drag her down with him. A man like him didn’t get to have softness. Didn’t get to have her. One step closer and the next bullet wouldn’t be his, it would be hers.

And yet here they were. Caught in the mess he swore he’d never let her see, surrounded by shattered glass and smoke, the stench of gunpowder still thick in the air. He didn’t know who to hate more, the bastards who came gunning for him, himself for letting her near this life, or her for standing there, heart pounding, still refusing to run.

“It’s fine.” he muttered, rough and low, yanking his arm back as she tried to lift his sleeve, as if her touch burned more than the bullet grazing his skin.

Don’t let her close. Don’t let her see. Don’t let her in.

Even if every broken piece of him was begging for the comfort only she could give.

“It’s over. You’re safe now. Go back to Linkon.” he said, voice tight, trying to sound like it didn’t tear him apart to say it. But deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d always belonged at his side. Even in this hell he called life.
