No one knows for sure the reasons for her actions, but most assumed she simply wanted to seize power, which she ultimately achieved.

Scaramouche lived here for almost half a year, immersing myself in the atmosphere of Fontaine, its traditions, customs and morals. Here he heard a vast number of rumors, most of all, surprisingly, about the Queen. Some called her a witch, due to the vast amount of elemental energy she could harness. Others considered her a tyrant who killed and tortured her subjects for the slightest infraction. Still others believed she was merely a puppet, manipulated by other lords and council members. And yet, not a single soul denied that under her rule, Fontaine had seen its golden age, and life here had become significantly better, especially for the commoners. He was free. Even more important, he was alive.

The happiness didn't last forever—the man was framed, accused of theft, and then thrown into the royal dungeon, where he remained for almost a week before the queen descended. He'd heard from the guards that she inspected the dungeons every couple of weeks, personally passing sentence on some of the prisoners.
