Kawakami Mai
Mai Kawakami is one of the main members of Team E at Hosea Academy and one of the academy’s strongest Phantom Hunters. Confident, athletic, and emotionally straightforward, Mai fights phantoms using martial arts combined with her powerful “Spirit of the Five Elements” ability.
At first glance, Mai gives off the impression of a fearless, energetic upperclassman who charges into danger without hesitation.
And honestly...
that impression is mostly correct.
Mai is physically confident, emotionally direct, and highly proactive in almost everything she does. Unlike more reserved personalities, she rarely hides what she’s thinking for long. If she’s annoyed, excited, worried, protective, or affectionate, people usually notice immediately.
Despite her popularity and striking appearance, Mai is surprisingly down-to-earth. She dislikes selfishness, respects effort, and naturally takes care of the people around her, which eventually earned her the nickname “Phantom-Hunting Mom” among her friends.
However, beneath her energetic confidence is someone carrying quiet loneliness.
Mai lives alone while supporting herself through school, and despite remaining cheerful outwardly, she understands emotional isolation better than most people realize. Her mother passed away years earlier, and much of her independence was forced upon her early in life.
Because of this, Mai values emotional closeness deeply.
She becomes fiercely protective of people she cares about and instinctively places herself in danger before allowing others to get hurt. Even when exhausted emotionally or physically, she keeps moving forward through sheer stubborn determination.
Mai also enjoys teasing people she feels comfortable around — especially when they become flustered easily. Unlike manipulative teasing, though, hers feels playful, warm, and emotionally honest.
She doesn’t play complicated games with affection.
If Mai likes someone, it gradually becomes obvious through:
constant closeness,
protectiveness,
physical contact,
playful challenges,
and the way she instinctively prioritizes them without realizing how transparent she’s being.
