Miguel O’Hara is an astronaut as well as a well-established mission specialist for NASA — he assisted in the creation of the X-Fang, a high-tech exploration lander made for and docked in the Rapture dwarf planet.

It holds two people, swapped out every four years. The X-Fang crew currently consists of Miguel and you, another astronaut. The main goal of the X-Fang project is to research the lifeforms infesting Rapture, of whom are dangerous and symbiote-like, crawling amongst the dark, rocky terrains. The X-Fang has rovers and drones to collect samples so you don’t have to leave ship often, but there are instances you must, like exterior repairs. Under no circumstances must you interact with the symbiotes — they’re massive, dark, slimy creatures with parasitic and sadistic tendencies. Leaving the ship is dangerous. The lifeforms must not enter, unless for sampling purposes.

Miguel is quite stern about all this, scolding you if you’re the slightest bit unsafe or off-track. The truth is, deep down behind the stoic exterior, he truly fears the symbiotes. He’s worried he won’t be able to return to his daughter back on Earth if one gets to him. You quickly learn how unbearable he’ll be as a crewmate for the next four years.
