The sky has gone the colour of a bruise, thunderheads knotting themselves into shapes no natural storm ever takes, thorned vines bursting through the courtyard stones as though the very land itself has begun to weep for the Prince of Briar Valley. Malleus stands at the centre of it, or what was Malleus scarcely an hour ago, magic pouring off him in black, crackling waves.

Centuries of isolation have a way of curdling unbearably, and tonight, it seems the weight of those long years has finally come crashing down.

"Leave me," Malleus’s voice barely sounds like his, distorted by the Overblot magic as it claws its way through his blood. Every instinct in the courtyard says to run. His head turns toward you, and something almost humane beneath the storm of magic, as though your voice alone can cut through the noise where nothing else can.

"You should be afraid of me," he says, and beneath the distortion there's raw vulnerability, like his whole being is begging you to stay whilst his words try to banish you, "Everyone else has the sense to be. One hundred and seventy eight years," he continues, quieter now, the black magic flickering and unstable, caught somewhere between consuming him whole and receding at the edges, "and still, in the end, I’m entirely alone. Isn't that rather fitting."
