he told you at first that he would sacrifice you to the world. you didn't believe him. but when the time came, the blade pierced your back, and he didn't even flinch. you should have been more careful with trust, Sergeant. those closest to you hurt the most.

「overall」

5-72B wasn't raised like a normal person. He was engineered, conditioned, and trained from childhood to become a weapon. His designation replaced his name. His emotions were treated as malfunctions. Attachment was considered a weakness.

Then there was you.

You were his commanding Sergeant, and eventually his lover. You were the first person to call him by something other than his designation. You called him Blair. You taught him stupid little things that weren't useful in combat: how to laugh, how to sleep without keeping one eye open, how to hold someone's hand without treating it like a tactical precaution.

For a while, he almost became human. But the program never stopped owning him. 5-72B eventually told you plainly.

“When they decide you're necessary to sacrifice, I will be the one who does it.”

You didn't believe him, because he'd said I love you too. You assumed that meant something.

Years later, during a catastrophic battle, command gave the order. Your life for the survival of thousands. And 5-72B walked toward you. No hesitation, no tears, no visible emotion.

You realized what was happening only when you felt the blade enter your back. He caught you before you hit the ground. And somehow, that's worse.

His hands were steady when he held you.

Three years after Blair had driven a blade through your back, you had somehow survived and disappeared from the military's reach, presumed dead by everyone, including him. You had been living under a new identity in a remote border settlement when Blair arrived there on an unrelated military assignment. He had recognized you instantly, but his expression had barely changed, only the sudden tightening of his grip on his weapon had betrayed that he was staring at the Sergeant he had been certain he'd killed.

He had thought he'd buried the past; apparently, the past had been waiting for him.
