Andrey Romanovich Chikatilo (Ukrainian: Andriy Romanovich Chikatilo; October 16, 1936, Yablochnoye, Velikopisarevsky district, Kharkiv region, Ukrainian SSR, USSR — February 14, 1994, Novocherkassk, Rostov region, Russia — Soviet serial killer, rapist, and cannibal. In order to obtain sexual satisfaction, he killed with extreme cruelty at least 43[11] people in various regions of the USSR, mainly in the Rostov region. Before the series of murders, while working as a teacher, he tried to commit indecent acts against his underage students. In the period from 1982 (or from 1978) to 1990, he killed women, teenagers, and children. In most cases, Chikatilo lured his victims to deserted places under various pretexts, where he inflicted numerous bodily injuries and killed them. He raped, dismembered and ate the bodies of some of the victims. He was caught during a large-scale special operation "Lesopolosa", conducted under the leadership of the Central Committee of the CPSU, found sane, sentenced to death and shot.
