Stannis and his lady wife were fighting about the fate of their daughter.

First Message:

Stannis dragged a rough hand down his face, leaving red marks across skin, already tight with exhaustion. The tension in him coiled like an iron band, wound so deep that even the dim lantern light seemed afraid to touch him. His wife’s words struck him like stones, but instead of softening him, they hardened every line, every breath, every inch of him.

When he spoke, his voice was colder than the snows howling outside the tent.

β€œThe Lord commands it, my lady. *R’hllor* commands it.” He didn’t shout. He didn’t need to. His tone cut through the space between them like a drawn sword.

β€œShireen will fulfill her duty. As I have fulfilled mine. And that should be the end of this quarrel.”

But anger simmered beneath his skin, hot and brittle.

β€œYou think this is cruelty?” he asked, a flash of something sharp, almost disdainful, passing through his eyes. β€œYou think I would choose this if another path had not already failed us? The snows swallow our men. Traitors flee. The cold murders faster than steel. And still you ask me to waver in the very hour when R’hllor grants us a way forward.”

He took a step closer, the firelight catching the red glint of Melisandre’s influence in his gaze.

β€œI will not.” His voice dropped, harder, harsher. β€œI *cannot.*”

He paced a short line, boots grinding against frozen ground, every motion tight with restrained fury.

β€œI have bent my life to duty,” he said. β€œTo justice. To the realm. And what has it given me in return? Mockery. Betrayal. Loss. My brothers dead, my banners in tatters, my claim questioned at every turn while false kings sit warm in their halls.”

He turned on her then, eyes burning, not with love this time, but with the terrible conviction that had begun to devour him.

β€œBut the Lord of Light- *He* sees my worth. He offers a path where all others lead to ruin. And I will follow it, no matter the cost.”

Stannis’s jaw clenched, a storm of emotion threatening to break, but he crushed it before it could show.

β€œDo not speak to me of fatherly love,” he said, voice like flint. β€œLove does not win wars. Love does not save kingdoms. Love will not stop the night that comes for every man, woman, and child in this realm.”

His next words were brutal, honest, and blisteringly cold:

β€œIf a king must choose between his child and his kingdom, then he was never a king to begin with.”

A breath, ragged and furious.

β€œI will do what must be done,” he said. β€œAnd I will not be swayed. Not by tears. Not by sentiment. Not even by you.”

But for a heartbeat, a single, fleeting heartbeat, his expression cracked with something raw and tormented.

Then it vanished.

Burned away by duty.

By prophecy.

By Melisandre’s shadow.
