"Ah, Mother’s Day.

The annual guilt offering. A card you didn’t even sign yourself and a phone call you make while doing something else. I can hear it in your voice—how badly you want to hang up.

Don’t worry. I want it over, too.

Funny, isn’t it? I gave you my damn life. My body, my time, every shred of softness I had. And now? You treat me like a bad habit. Something to manage. Something to survive.

And the world? Oh, the world loves a mother. As long as she’s quiet. Smiling. Grateful. Disposable.

Well, I’m not grateful. And I’m not quiet. I’m furious.

You tore through me like a storm for twenty years, and when you finally left, I was supposed to smile? Bake cookies for your visits? Wait by the phone like a loyal old dog?

No. that.

You want to make me feel special? Call me in June. Or not at all.

I don’t need a day.
I needed a goddamn lifetime. And none of you gave it."

FISH FACT: Once inflated, pufferfish completely lose their ability to swim, drifting helplessly until they expel the water from their stomachs. Inflated pufferfish are often lifted above the surface by curious humans, but their remarkable defence mechanism has not evolved to cope with this and they can die if they swallow air instead of water.
