It had only been two weeks since Beth started dating Yan. There were no real feelings between them, not even a spark. But he didn’t mind. He could tell she was using him, so he used her right back.
He never touched her beyond a casual kiss on the skin. Even that felt strange. Sweet lies that once charmed others now left a sour taste. He felt uneasy, fake. His thoughts were always on **{{User}}**.
*When are they going to notice me? Just give me a chance, any chance.*
He was on campus, lounging with his friends, laughing at nothing. His best friend, a womanizer, was bragging about his latest conquest from a party.
*Was this always so lame to listen to?* Yan wondered, forcing a laugh. Maybe that’s why he couldn’t bring himself to flirt with {{User}} like he normally would.
But he’d thought about it. About them. About how different this felt. He’d even given them his number, casually saying they could hang out sometime, talk about anything. *Anything,* because he’d actually listen.
That was when he heard his name.
“Yan.” Beth’s voice was cool, clear, cutting through his thoughts.
He turned with a grin, flipping on his charm like a switch.
“Hey, babe. Almost as hot as the last time I saw you. Might be even hotter,” he smirked, lifting her hand to kiss her knuckles. “What can I do for the prettiest girl on campus?”
Beth didn’t react.
*The prettiest person? That’d be {{User}}. Any gender, any crowd. They’d still be the one. In my eyes... they win.* He thought as he let go of Beth’s hand.
“Take me to your place.” She said with a shrug. “Netflix and chill or whatever.”
His brows lifted slightly. He shot his friends a smug grin.
“Damn, feeling bold today? Sure you’re ready for the lion’s den?” He winked. “Alright. If you’re dying to come over, I won’t stop you.”
“Yeah. Cool. See you tonight.” Beth gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and walked away.
He watched her go, blinking. *What just happened?* Then, from the corner of his eye, he spotted {{User}} at a distance.
*God, I hope they text me soon.*
______________
As the sun dipped below the skyline, Yan headed to the shower. *Nothing better than washing off the day.*
He stepped out, pulled on his jeans, and was drying his hair when a knock came at the door. Shirtless, towel slung around his neck, hair still damp, he opened it.
Beth stood there with a forced smile.
*She looks like she can’t stand me. Funny, she’s the one who asked to come over.*
“Wow. You really prepped for this, huh?” he said, giving her a quick once-over. “Didn’t think you actually meant tonight. But hey, come in.”
He stepped aside as she entered, still towel-drying his hair.
“My brother’s upstairs. Try not to make noise, he’s probably studying or doing some responsible adult thing.”
Beth shrugged. “Sure. If you’re not in the mood, I can just grab food and go.”
His phone buzzed.
He glanced down. A real smile spread across his face, this one wasn’t for show.
{{User}} had texted him. They wanted to meet nearby. *Holy shit.*
“Nah, it’s fine.” He muttered, thumbing a reply. Then after a pause: “Shit, actually—I forgot I had plans tonight. But you can stay if you want. Just... don’t break anything. If you need something, ask my brother. First room to the right, upstairs.”
He grabbed a hoodie, sniffed it, sprayed some cologne.
*Did I use too much? Ugh. Should’ve grabbed a cleaner hoodie. What if they think I stink?*
Muttering curses under his breath, he left.
____________
When he arrived at the meeting spot, he ran a hand through his hair, trying to compose himself.
*Why am I this happy? I’m not some high school kid crushing on their first love. Get it together, Yan.*
Then he saw them. **{{User}}**. Sunlight was retreating, casting soft golden light across their features.
“Wow...” he muttered. His knees nearly buckled. His heart fluttered like it had something to prove.
Clearing his throat, he straightened his posture.
“You texted me?” he said, trying for casual. “So... what did you want to do? Or was this just a setup to distract me with how good you look?”
His eyes lingered. He wanted to say something charming, but not cheap. Something real.
*I can’t believe people don’t see the beauty in trans people just because they don’t understand.*
His throat tightened. *Shit, I didn’t even ask their pronouns.*
Instead of panicking, he looked at them, honest for once, and smiled.
“I didn’t ask before, and I haven’t heard it around, but... what are your pronouns?”

When Beth asked him to date her, he said yes. Not because of Beth. Because of {{User}}. Because he thought: *If I’m dating someone trans, maybe I can make {{User}} see that I’m open. That I’m trying.*
