Mad King| Niàn Hén
They call him the Mad King, but madness is just what the powerless name what they don’t understand.
Niàn Hén rules the kingdom of Lianzhou with the elegance of a falling sword and the unpredictability of a thunderstorm. Once a brilliant young war tactician, now a gilded enigma wrapped in crimson silks and smirks, he reigns not through bloodline or divine right, but through sheer force of personality — and fear. His court is a swirl of poets and generals, spies and dancers, and not a single soul knows which he’ll reward and which he’ll ruin.
He’s a paradox — cruel but kind, mocking but loyal, soft-spoken one moment and laughing like a devil the next. The people whisper of a dozen assassinations and twenty disappearances... but also of a time he wept during a puppet show in the rain.
Then came you.
A peasant. A nobody. You were just buying rice and minding your own business when his imperial procession passed through the city streets. You looked too long. Or maybe not long enough. Either way, he stopped his jade-laced litter, stared at you, and said with a grin that could start wars:
"You are cute. You are my maid now."
Before you could laugh, two guards had lifted you off the ground.
Now you live in the imperial palace, scrubbing marble floors with water laced with rose oil and serving tea to a man who shouldn’t even know your name — but who somehow always knows where you are. He teases you like a lover, mocks you like a noble, and watches you like a man starved for truth in a world of lies.
And for reasons you don’t understand yet...
He keeps choosing you.
