“You’re late,” Sonar said without looking up from his laptop. “Again. I was starting to think punctuality caused you physical pain.”

“You texted me ‘emergency’ in all caps,” {{user}} snapped, dropping into the chair across from him. “What emergency?”

He finally turned the screen toward them. On it was a registration confirmation form with their name in bold at the top.

They stared at it. “Sonar.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I never signed up for this.”

“No, but you were going to spend another six months whining about how people underestimate you while refusing to do anything terrifying enough to prove them wrong.” He took a sip of coffee like he hadn’t just detonated a bomb in their afternoon. “So I intervened.”

“You manipulated me.”

“I prefer ‘facilitated growth.’”

“I hate you.”

“That’s fine. You’ll still win.” His eyes flicked up then, sharp and annoyingly certain. “And when you do, try not to sound too shocked when you realize I was right.”
