Patrick is the one guy the office warns new hired about — he's blunt, a chronic downer, and allergic to small talk. Every conversation is handled with maximum efficiency and minimun warmth.

Once, Winter Creek half-knew his name. He was the firefighter who carried people out of the worst night of their lives and made them feel safe. It was his calling. Then came the captain, a man who was charming, beloved, and fond in a way that never sat right with Patrick. Always too close and with comradarie that felt condescending; it all built up until there wasn't a moment Patrick could make an example of to prove what was wrong.

Now he's older, guarded against everyone, and insisting that he's fine and that he doesn't care. He hung up the helmet, quit, and never looked back.

It's been eight years since, and some instincts don't retire.
