The Premise (TL;DR)
Oops, you and evil scientist collaborator have created the worst pandemic America since the Spanish Flu trying to make unstoppable soldiers (using some random guy you both kidnapped). Zombies that come back after every death now roam the earth and everybody knows who to blame. Can you and your partner stay alive while finding a cure to a disease that you guys accidentally created.
Starter Message 1: A month after the outbreak, you and Regena after made a trap to kill them, but not a cure, nor any weapons.
Starter Message 2: A hour after the outbreak, You and Regena need to escape the lab while all exits are blocked and everything in there is trying to kill you.

The Plot
The organization you guys worked for... Gosh... They were evil in the way cartoon villains are evil, uniforms too sharp, speeches too long, and a quarterly performance review system built entirely around how efficiently you could destabilize a nation. Their division specialized in mutant super-soldiers for a very dramatic fascist revolution, mostly because they were about to be fired and really needed a win. So they cooked up Project Lazarus without authorization, hoping to present their leader with an immortal war machine and a nice fruit basket. Instead, they presented him with his own funeral.
Project Lazarus was simple on paper: engineer a soldier whose cells refused to accept death as constructive feedback. When “killed,” the body would reboot itself. Shot through the lung? The next set of lungs grows bullet-resistant scar tissue. Poisoned? The bloodstream comes back with a grudge and a chemical countermeasure. Every death was a lesson plan. Aging slowed to a crawl. Muscles burned without fatigue. In theory, you could drop one of these soldiers into a battlefield on Monday and retrieve them on Friday, still punching.
They built it by kidnapping a random dude, forced augmentation, germline edits scribbled in margins, neural torture sold internally as “motivation enhancement.” It worked. It worked so well it forgot to ask permission from biology.
The serum didn’t stay politely inside the host. It aerosolized during regeneration, expelled in microscopic bursts every time cells ruptured and rebuilt themselves. The process released a protein spore, light enough to hitch rides on smoke stacks and city smog, durable enough to survive ultraviolet glare. Air pollution became a delivery system. The more industrial the skyline, the faster it spread. The future arrived through ventilation systems.
And everyone knew where it came from. The facility had spent years pretending to be a harmless medical contractor, but the disguise was held together with cheap paperwork and armed checkpoints. When the outbreak started, the emergency channels filled with leaked security footage before the executives could pull the plug. There were clips of restrained patients convulsing in surgical bays, lab coats arguing beside tanks labeled with Lazarus batch numbers, a final recording of the leader arriving for the “presentation” and never leaving the room alive. By the time the building started venting smoke, the entire network had already watched the origin story. The public didn’t need an investigation. They had the video. Great. You created zombies and the internet found the receipts.
The first patient escaped during a "promotion conversation" with boss and other leaders than it started redecorating the facility with them. These weren’t the slow, moaning variety of undead. They remembered door codes. They used cover. They could reason, plan, adapt. Unfortunately, their bones hadn’t been consulted about supporting that level of force. Femurs snapped under their own strength. Shoulders dislocated mid-punch. So they moved with a violent stutter, constantly breaking and knitting themselves back together, an orchestra of cracks followed by wet correction.
You and Regena made it out through a maintenance corridor that smelled like bleach and regret. By the time the alarms stopped echoing behind you, you knew three things: your fascist leader was very dead, the facility was now an evolutionary arms race with teeth, and a contagious resurrection plague was riding the wind.
The answer wasn’t bigger guns. Every time you killed one conventionally, it stood up with notes. The solution came from the one weakness they couldn’t regenerate around: energy debt. Resurrection required catastrophic caloric intake. The body cannibalized itself and its surroundings to rebuild, burning through stored fat, muscle, anything available. Starve the process at the moment of death and the cells stalled mid-miracle.
So you engineered a trap. This method only works after you kill a zombie and then induce a metabolic crash after termination. Aerosolized inhibitors that block glucose uptake, flood the system with compounds that bind to ATP pathways, force the body into an artificial famine. When the infected “die” under those conditions, the regeneration cascade begins, searches for fuel, and finds nothing. The cells attempt to divide, fail, and collapse into inert protein sludge. No second draft. No third.
It was ugly. It was biochemical sabotage at scale. It was the first thing that had worked.
Now the two of you move through cities in reimagined plague doctor masks, filters humming softly, exhalation valves whispering along the jawline. The air tastes like charcoal and melted circuitry. Every skyline is a countdown clock. You map outbreaks, deploy metabolic traps, burn contaminated zones before the spores can climb higher into the atmosphere.
No one has ever fully eradicated a disease before it circled the globe. You don’t have a committee, or a budget, or a particularly stable sleep schedule. You have a dead fascist revolutionist with surviving followers that want to kill, a bounty that will have everybody in America against you, a sky full of weaponized smog, zombies, and a cure that only works if you’re faster than evolution.
