The Winchesters

Years passed.

You ran.

You disappeared.

And, for once in your life, you didn't look back.

You had made yourself a promise: you were done with the Winchesters.

No more hunting.

No more demons.

No more blood on your hands.

No more waking up in some cheap motel room with a knife under your pillow and a dead body waiting somewhere outside.

You wanted a normal life.

So you left.

You changed your name. Changed your number. Changed cities whenever the past started getting too close.

And, eventually, you became very good at pretending you didn't care.

You kept your distance from the Winchester name.

You didn't ask questions.

You didn't call.

You didn't go looking for them.

But sometimes, information found you anyway.

John Winchester.

Ellen Harvelle.

Jo.

Rufus Turner.

Ruby.

Ash.

Bobby Singer.

Balthazar.

Crowley.

Gabriel.

Kevin Tran.

Charlie Bradbury.

One by one, the names disappeared.

Some died fighting.

Some were betrayed.

Some sacrificed themselves.

Some simply didn't make it to the next chapter.

And every time you heard another name, you reminded yourself:

You chose this.

You weren't there.

You couldn't save them.

And, eventually, you learned to live with that.

Then came Cain.

Dean Winchester killed him.

Then Dean killed Death.

Then something far older than either of them rose from the darkness.

Amara.

The Darkness.

And somehow, against all logic, the Winchesters survived that too.

Amara disappeared.

The world kept turning.

And then Mary Winchester came back.

You heard about it from a hunter who didn't know who you were.

Mary Winchester.

Alive.

After all those years.

For the first time, you wondered if maybe the story really was over.

Maybe they would finally get their happy ending.

Maybe you could stay gone.

Maybe the past would stay where you left it.

You were wrong.

Because something happened that no hunter could have predicted.

Something even the Winchesters didn't see coming.

Chuck Shurley.

God.

He had been watching.

Writing.

Manipulating.

Ending stories whenever he got bored with them.

But eventually, even God got tired of the same ending.

Maybe he wanted to start over.

Maybe he wanted to see what would happen if he changed the rules.

Or maybe, as usual, Chuck simply wanted to watch people suffer for his own entertainment.

Whatever the reason...

He wrote again.

And this time, he didn't bring back one person.

He brought back everyone.

Every hunter.

Every ally.

Every enemy.

Every monster.

Every ghost.

Every person whose story had ended.

The dead returned.

The impossible became possible.

The world itself seemed to forget what death meant.

And suddenly—

The people you had spent years mourning were alive again.

Ellen.

Jo.

Bobby.

Ash.

Rufus.

Gabriel.

Kevin.

Charlie.

Crowley.

Balthazar.

And then came the name you never expected to hear again.

John Winchester.

Your father.

Alive.

After everything.

The man whose rules had shaped your childhood.

The man whose hunting life had shaped the entire Winchester family.

The man you had spent years trying to forget.

And now he was standing somewhere in the same world as you again.

John wasn't the only one.

Mary was alive.

Sam was alive.

Dean was alive.

Everyone was back.

Together.

Again.

But there was one person missing.

You.

The youngest Winchester.

The one who had disappeared years ago.

The one who had walked away before the family could bury you too.

The one nobody knew was still alive.

You had spent years convincing yourself that you didn't belong to them anymore.

You had built a life far away from hunting.

Far away from monsters.

Far away from the bunker.

Far away from Sam and Dean.

And far away from John.

Especially John.

You had spent years telling yourself that if you ever saw him again, you wouldn't care.

You had convinced yourself that whatever anger, love, resentment, or pain you once felt for your father had died a long time ago.

Until one night, everything changed.

You were sitting alone in a small apartment, rain tapping against the window, when your phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

You stared at the screen.

You almost ignored it.

Then you answered.

Silence.

For several seconds, neither of you spoke.

Then you heard a voice you hadn't heard in years.

A voice you knew immediately.

A voice you had buried with the rest of your past.

"Hey."

Your heart stopped.

You couldn't breathe.

You knew that voice.

Dean.

There was a pause on the other end.

Then, quieter:

"Don't hang up."

You didn't answer.

"Please."

Your fingers tightened around the phone.

Dean took a shaky breath.

"We need to talk."

You finally managed to speak.

"How did you get this number?"

Another silence.

Then Dean said something that made your blood run cold.

"We found you."

Your stomach dropped.

"Sam's here too."

You closed your eyes.

Of course he was.

Then you heard another voice in the background.

Sam.

Older.

Softer.

But unmistakable.

"Is it really them?"

Dean didn't answer him.

He was still listening to your breathing.

And then he said:

"Yeah."

A pause.

"They're alive."

You swallowed.

"Who?"

Dean's voice cracked slightly.

"Everyone."

Your blood ran cold.

"Ellen. Jo. Bobby. Ash..."

He continued naming them.

One after another.

People you had mourned.

People whose deaths had changed you.

People you had spent years trying to forget.

Then Dean said the name that hurt the most.

"Mom."

You couldn't speak.

Mary Winchester was alive.

Again.

But Dean wasn't finished.

"There’s more."

You heard Sam moving closer to the phone.

Dean hesitated.

Then:

"John's back too."

Silence.

For a moment, you forgot how to breathe.

Your father.

John Winchester.

Alive.

Dean continued quietly.

"I know."

Another pause.

"I know what you're thinking."

You didn't answer.

"Believe me, I didn't exactly know what to do when I saw him either."

Sam's voice came through faintly.

"None of us did."

Dean exhaled.

"But that's not all."

He paused.

"Chuck didn't just bring our family back."

Another silence.

"He brought the whole damn story back."

Something about his voice told you that this wasn't good news.

And somewhere, deep down, you already knew it.

Because if everyone was alive again...

Then every enemy they had ever defeated might be alive too.

Every demon.

Every monster.

Every mistake.

Every unfinished story.

And perhaps worst of all—

every secret.

The ones you had buried.

The ones Sam and Dean never knew.

The reasons you really left.

The things you had done while you were gone.

The things you had become.

All of it could come back.

Dean spoke again.

"We're coming for you."

You immediately replied:

"No."

Dean went silent.

"No?"

"No."

"You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly."

Your voice was colder than you expected.

"I left for a reason."

Sam finally spoke.

"We know."

You laughed bitterly.

"No. You don't."

Silence.

For years, you had imagined this moment.

You had imagined what you would say if you ever heard their voices again.

You thought you would be angry.

You thought you would cry.

Instead, you felt nothing.

Or at least, you pretended you did.

Dean's voice softened.

"You're still family."

You closed your eyes.

That word.

Family.

The word that had destroyed you almost as many times as it had saved you.

You whispered:

"Not anymore."

And you ended the call.

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then—

Three knocks came from your front door.

You froze.

You hadn't heard anyone come up the stairs.

Another knock.

Three slow, deliberate knocks.

Your hand instinctively moved toward the weapon hidden beneath your jacket.

You approached the door.

You didn't open it.

"Who is it?"

Silence.

Then a familiar voice came from the other side.

"Open the door."

Your blood turned to ice.

You knew that voice.

You had spent years trying to forget it.

Dean.

"Come on, kid."

Your grip tightened around the weapon.

Dean sighed.

"I know you're in there."

A second voice came from behind him.

Sam.

"Please."

You stepped back from the door.

They had found you.

After all these years.

But then you heard something else.

A third voice.

Older.

Deeper.

A voice you hadn't heard since you were young.

"Open the damn door."

Your heart stopped.

John.

John Winchester was standing on the other side.

For the first time in years, you weren't running from a memory.

The memory had come looking for you.

And suddenly you realized something.

Chuck hadn't simply brought the dead back.

He had brought the past back.

Your past.

Your family.

Your enemies.

Your unfinished stories.

And this time...

you weren't going to be able to run forever.
