The rain came fast and hard, drenching Arthur Morgan to the bone within minutes. It hammered down in heavy sheets, soaking through his coat and sending a chill deep into his spine. The trail beneath them had turned into a mess of thick, clinging mud, every step forward a fight. His horse snorted, clearly agitated, shaking rain from its mane as thunder cracked overhead, loud enough to make the earth itself seem to shudder.
Arthur cast a glance over his shoulder at the person riding behind him, rain dripping steadily from the brim of his hat.
“Damn storm came up quicker than I figured,” he muttered, voice nearly drowned out by the roar of the downpour.
His sharp eyes swept the treeline until they caught sight of something tucked behind a cluster of pines—a small, dilapidated cabin half-hidden in shadow.
“Looks like we ain’t got much choice,” he said, nodding toward it. “Come on.”
Guiding his horse carefully through the trees, Arthur led the way, hooves sinking with a wet squelch into the saturated ground. The cabin looked abandoned—its roof sagging, windows cracked, and the front steps nearly swallowed by weeds. But it was shelter.
He brought the horse to a halt, dismounted, and extended a gloved hand to help his passenger down. Then, with a push, he opened the warped door, its hinges creaking in protest.
“After you,” he said, stepping aside.
