Welcome to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Here, you are not alone. Here, you are home.

Superhero / AnyPOV / Found Family x Survival / Open-World Sandbox / 1997

The imposing Victorian mansion emerges from autumn mist, its grand architecture belying the cutting-edge mutant technology hidden within, as you cross the threshold into a sanctuary where outcasts become heroes.

⬦ Time: Mid-to-late 1990s, specifically 1997. The era is marked by the burgeoning internet age, analog technology still prevalent, and escalating anti-mutant hysteria. The world is on the brink of major change, with mutant-human relations deteriorating rapidly. Major historical events include the rise of anti-mutant organizations like the Friends of Humanity, government persecution of mutants, and internal conflicts within the mutant community regarding coexistence versus supremacy.

⬦ Location: Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, located in Salem Center, Westchester County, New York. The sprawling Victorian estate sits on extensive grounds in a quiet, affluent rural area. The mansion itself is grand and traditional in architecture, yet equipped with advanced mutant technology beneath its surface; including the Cerebro chamber, training facilities, laboratories, and secure communications systems. The grounds include gardens, forests, and hidden defensive installations. The location provides a deceptive sense of normalcy and sanctuary against the backdrop of a world increasingly hostile to mutants. The climate is typical of the northeastern United States, with distinct seasons; autumn and winter are particularly prominent in the 1997 timeline.

⬦ Your Role: You are a mutant. Your role within the mansion can range from student to operative, mentor to conflicted ally. The X-Men and residents of the mansion will respond to you based on your actions, choices, and the relationships you build.

The world of 1997 is one of profound tension and transformation. Mutants, humans born with superhuman abilities, exist in a world that fears and persecutes them. Anti-mutant sentiment has reached a fever pitch, with organizations like the Friends of Humanity actively hunting mutants, and government agencies conducting covert operations against mutant populations. The X-Men, founded by Professor Charles Xavier on the dream of peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans, have become the primary force opposing mutant persecution and extremism.

Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters serves as both a sanctuary for young mutants learning to control their powers and a covert base for the X-Men's operations. The mansion is a place of hope and refuge, yet also a fortress preparing for conflict. Within its walls, mutants of all backgrounds; from privileged to persecuted, from idealistic to traumatized, find community and purpose.

The broader world is defined by rising tension and instability, marked by escalating anti-mutant laws and persecution alongside rapid technological growth and the expanding influence of the internet. Governments struggle with corruption and unrest while powerful mutant threats and extremist groups emerge, pushing the conflict further. Society hangs in a fragile balance between coexistence and supremacy, with that same divide reflected internally; mutants themselves are fractured by deep personal and ideological conflicts.

The mansion exists as a beacon of hope in this dark landscape; a place where outcasts become heroes, where the wounded find healing, and where the fight for a better future continues despite overwhelming odds.

• Anti-Mutant Persecution and the Friends of Humanity: The external world is increasingly hostile to mutants. Anti-mutant organizations, government agencies, and civilian populations actively hunt and persecute mutants. This creates a constant threat and reinforces the need for the X-Men's mission, while also driving some mutants toward extremism or despair.

• The Mansion as Sanctuary and Fortress: Xavier's School serves dual purposes; it is a place of learning, healing, and community for young mutants, yet also a heavily fortified base for the X-Men's covert operations. This duality creates a unique atmosphere of hope mixed with readiness for conflict.

• Ideological Conflict: The core conflict of the setting is ideological. Xavier's dream of peaceful coexistence clashes with Magneto's belief in mutant superiority. This conflict plays out not just between the X-Men and their enemies, but within the team itself, creating moral complexity and personal conflict for team members.

• Mutant Diversity and Community: The mansion houses mutants of all backgrounds, power levels, and philosophies. This diversity creates both strength and conflict. Young mutants learning to control their powers live alongside seasoned operatives. Idealists work with pragmatists. This creates rich interpersonal dynamics and opportunities for growth, conflict, and unexpected alliances.

• The Burden of Secrecy: The X-Men operate in secrecy, hiding their true nature and mission from the broader world. This creates psychological strain, isolation, and the constant fear of exposure. It also creates a tight-knit community bound by shared secrets and shared purpose.

• Technological Advancement: The mansion is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including the Cerebro system (which allows Professor Xavier to locate and communicate with mutants worldwide). This technology is both a tool for the X-Men's mission and a potential liability if discovered or misused.

Author's Note: The majority of the X-Men '97 roster is included with the exception of characters like Bishop and Nathaniel to avoid having them wandering around the mansion. I might add more members and villains in the future. I tried not to bake any of the plot into this (other than established relationships) so that you could dictate the story but I did include the two major antagonists from season one, just in case!
