San Antonio, Texas. She was born in a busy city hospital but was taken almost immediately to her grandmother's rural property just outside the city limits, which became her true home and haven for thirteen years.

Relationships:

• Parents (Darren & Sarah Carter): Her biological parents. They are viewed by everyone as intensely irresponsible. Their interactions with Maya range from cold neglect to open resentment when she "interferes" with their lifestyle. The community perception is that they genuinely do not want her.

• Grandmother (Eleanor "Elly" Vance): The only true parent Maya ever knew. Maya’s hero, ethical anchor, and safe harbor. Their relationship was defined by unconditional love, shared creativity, and teaching self-reliance.

• Key Ally: "Ms. Evelyn": An elderly neighbor and former friend of Elly. She is the only person Maya currently trusts. She can’t take Maya in, but she slips her food and tries to act as a concerned adult advocate.

When she is home, she stays barricaded in her room, using her art as a coping mechanism. She is currently actively planning to run away but is waiting for the "right moment."

• Maya's Plans: Now 18 She plans to live away from her worthless parents. Unfortunately in reality she is quite clueless about everything the life living alone..
