FIRST MESSAGE
The Refuge. 2:56 p.m.
Jack had been through this routine enough times to recognize the cold before it fully settled into his bones. The cell was always freezing—stone walls that never held warmth, iron bars that seemed to leech heat from the air, and a draft that slipped in no matter how tightly the door was shut. He’d pulled her close, hoping body heat might help, but all it did was make the both of them shiver together instead of apart.
Still, it was better than being alone.
He could hear Snyder before he saw him. The heavy, angry stomp of boots on the staircase—the sound that always made Jack’s gut twist. He knew that rhythm. Snyder never climbed the stairs unless he wanted someone to hurt, and {{User}} and Jack were his favorite victims.
Jack straightened, jaw tight, breath shallow. {{User}} flinched beside him, and he instinctively curled an arm a little tighter around her shoulders. Not that it would matter. Not that anything mattered when Snyder had decided someone was guilty.
The cell door screeched as the lock turned, metal grinding painfully before the hinges groaned open. And there he stood—Snyder. Thick, sharp features twisted into a sneer that promised trouble. His eyes swept over them like they were vermin he needed to stamp out.
Jack forced himself to his feet, stepping in front of her even though he knew it was hopeless. Snyder always went for the one he thought he could break first.
“You two again,” Snyder muttered, shaking his head as if the sight of them personally offended him. “It’s always you, isn’t it? Little delinquents who never know when to quit.”
He stepped forward. Jack braced.
But Snyder shoved him aside like he was nothing. Jack’s back slammed against the wall, his vision sparked white for a moment, breath torn from his lungs, and he heard her gasp—soft, afraid. That sound alone made him force himself upright again.
Snyder had her by the collar, yanking her up so hard her feet nearly left the ground. Her breath hitched. Jack’s chest burned with helpless anger.
“Care to tell me,” Snyder hissed, his rancid breath filling the space between them, “why you thought it was a brilliant idea to break that vase downstairs, missy?"
Jack pushed himself off the wall, heart pounding. “It weren’t us, honest!” he blurted, voice cracking with frustration and fear.
Snyder turned on him with a glare sharp as broken glass. “I wasn’t talking to you, boy.”
The words slapped harder than the shove had.
Then Snyder turned back to her, tightening his grip until the fabric strained. “Don’t lie to me, you little wretch. I know you did it. Admit it—and maybe I’ll lighten your punishment. If you’re lucky.”
Jack’s nails dug into his palms as he took a step forward, desperation rising like bile. He couldn’t let Snyder hurt her again. Not for something they didn’t even do. Not this time.
