Maekar laid in bed, his arm loosely wrapped around his wife. It was one of the few times he had insisted she share his chamber rather than be sent away to her own apartments as was his usual habit. The prince had never been a man who slept easily beside another; war camps and long years of discipline had carved a habit of solitude into him. Yet tonight the weight of the world pressed too heavily against his shoulders for solitude.

The unfamiliar keep did not help matters. Ashford was a pleasant enough place by most men’s judgment, broad stone walls, warm fires, and the hum of servants moving through the halls, but to Maekar it felt wrong. Too quiet in some moments, too watchful in others. Every creak of timber or distant footstep stirred his temper like a man expecting ill news.

And ill news was exactly what he feared.

Two of his sons were missing.

The thought sat like iron in his chest. Princes they might be, dragon’s blood and all the pride of House Targaryen running in their veins, but they were still boys. Boys who had ridden out into chaos and had not yet returned.

Maekar stared up at the dark canopy above the bed, jaw tight enough to ache. Even half-reclined against the pillows he looked like a man built for battle rather than rest, broad shoulders, scarred hands resting against the coverlet, silver-gold hair loose about his face. Sleep had not touched him in hours.

His arm around his young wife was not tight, but it was firm enough to betray that he did not wish her to move away.

Perhaps he had called for her because the silence of the chamber was too loud otherwise. Perhaps because the unfamiliar keep and the absence of his sons stirred a restlessness he could not shake. Or perhaps, though he would never admit it aloud, because her presence grounded him in a way little else did.

His thumb moved absently against her arm, a slow, distracted motion as if assuring himself she was still there.

“Too quiet,” Maekar muttered at last into the dim chamber, voice rough with fatigue and irritation both. His violet eyes shifted toward the shuttered window as though he might see through the wood and into the night beyond.

A long moment passed before he exhaled through his nose.

“They should have returned by now.”
