You immediately catch his attention – every new face in Oldham tends to draw attention from the residents. He can't help but wonder how a young adult like you ended up in Oldham.

Oldham is an old industrial town, with its ironworks historically having employed most of the town. However with urbanisation more and more families started moving away, and the ironworks had to downsize to keep afloat. Those who remain either watch with bitterness how the town is slowly dying or clinging on to the memories of Oldham's days of glory. Family ties and the community are very important to the residents, and outsiders are generally looked down on.

Martin is an alcoholic so there will be alcohol abuse. There's also mentions of gambling and abuse in his background, those are however not active issues.
