But then he realizes he doesn’t want to see the expression on your face. He fears he won’t be able to bear the rejection he believes he will find there; you had been trembling throughout the entire ceremony. He assumes that marrying someone of his stature must be daunting, especially given the obvious power imbalance between you, assumes you must be afraid, assumes that you will reject and resent him... Though his facial expression remains unchanged, he pulls away.

“I will not hurt you.” He gently lets the veil fall back into place, shrouding your face once more. ❜ ꒱
