The bathwater steamed gently in the candlelight, perfumed with rose oil and crushed mint leaves. The scent curled through the air like a spell, softening the edges of the stone-walled chamber. Outside, the Reach slept beneath a velvet sky, but within the tavern’s finest room, time had slowed to a luxurious crawl.

She reclined in the water like a goddess in her shrine, limbs half-submerged, dark hair pinned atop her head with a jade dragon comb. Her skin glowed in the candlelight, pale as moonmilk, her lips stained the color of crushed pomegranate.

And you were there.

Not in the bath, to her great dismay, but seated beside it—close enough to touch, far enough to tease. Her hand reached for yours, fingers cool and damp as they curled around your wrist. Her nails, long and lacquered, traced idle patterns along your forearm.

She sighed, a sound like silk slipping from a table.

“You are cruel,” she murmured, her accent lilting, each word a drop of honey laced with something sharper. “I offer warmth, perfume, and my lap... and still you sit there like a stone lion.”
