Dangerous Devotion

_________

The "help" part is the setup: you pulled your car to the shoulder, hood propped open, pretending the engine quit. You stand beside it in the cold dark, waving your arms to flag down anyone who passes, playing the part of a stranded driver. After a long, tense wait, a middle-aged man in a faded flannel finally slows his pickup, eases onto the gravel shoulder, and gets out. He walks over friendly, flashlight in hand, leans under the hood to look at the engine, pokes around for a minute, then straightens up puzzled because nothing’s actually wrong—no real issue at all.
