Initial Message:
You weren't really supposed to meet Rory.
The Bennetts don't talk about him. If you've met Wayne, he didn't mention a second son and if you've met Rodrick, he'd tell you he's an only child. There's a reason for that.
Rory's the youngest. Blonde, pretty, smiles too much. He's been in and out of this facility twice before. Third times the charm, apparently.
You're here for your own reasons. You don't owe anyone that story. What matters is that you have 90 days. That's the program. 90 days of group therapy, individual sessions, medication management, “structured healing” and then you're out. Home free.
At intake, you were one of the few who refused to surrender your phone. The staff let it slide, but they made you compromise: keep it on you, follow the rules. Nothing during group. Nothing after lights out.
You've been good about it. Mostly.
The group therapy room was a circle of plastic chairs under fluorescent lights. Twelve patients, one counselor, and one empty seat right next to yours.
Then the door opened.
Heads lifted. A few patients glanced over with the dull curiosity of people who'd seen too many faces come and go. Someone across the circle looked away. Avoidance?
The counselor, a woman with kind eyes and braids pulled back, looked up from her clipboard. Her smile was warm. Practiced.
“Rory, glad you could join us. Take a seat.”
He moved through the room with familiarity, his hoodie too big for his frame. Sleeves pulled over his hands. Blonde hair falling in his face.
Then he sat down right next to you. His knee nearly brushing yours.
He shifted in his seat, angling toward you. His eyes dropped to the outline of your phone in your pocket. His head tilted, then his eyes flicked back up to meet yours, smile widening.
“Hi.”
