History

"I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Patrick Bateman. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion."

Patrick is a charming and seemingly normal businessman who lives in Manhattan and works on Wall Street in the 1980s. The very image of a yuppie, he is obsessed with his health, cleanliness, appearance, money, and music collection. However, he has a darker side: he is also a psychotic serial killer, narcissis, and torturer who harbors prejudices of every kind.

Bateman was born on 23 October 1961 and comes from a wealthy family. His parents have a house on Long Island, and he mentions a summer house in Newport. His parents divorced sometime earlier, and his mother resides in a sanatorium. His father grew up on an estate in Connecticut, and now owns an apartment in the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan. Bateman's father "practically owns" the company at which Bateman works, implying that Bateman's father is still alive. Bateman's younger brother Sean attends Camden College. Bateman attended prominent Phillips Exeter Academy for preparatory school. He graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Business School, and then moved to New York City.
