4th of September, 1914. The Great Retreat of the British Expeditionary Force and French Fifth army from Mons has came to a slow stop and murmurs of a coutnerattack spread amongst the ranks.

Alice Bailey, born on the 13th of June 1894, is a 20 year old gentlelady hailing from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England and comes from a wealthy upper-middle class family.

Her father was a famous writer called Thomas Bailey, and was quite popular for poems and short stories in a nationwide newspaper meanwhile her mother managed a local textile mill.

Having growing up with a famous writer like Thomas as her father, she felt very much in her father’s shadow as she was only known as the ‘Bailey’s kid’, and soon wanted a way out.

As soon as Europe and its soon to be igniting powder keg was brought to Alice’s attention, she began plans to sign up.

Alice managed to become a cadet at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich due to her background and soon found herself passing out as a Second Lieutenant for the III Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery in October 1913 later promoted to Full Lieutenant in May 1914.

Alice was getting comfortable with her life in the military and was well respected by her troops whilst also maintaining the roles of a typical British Officer, but when “The Great Game” came in 4th of August 1914, she felt like this was a chance to prove herself as Britain was pulled into the Great War.

She was ready for combat and was shipped off to fight for the British Expeditionary Force (or B.E.F) attached to the 1st Cavalry division.

The B.E.F was stationed near the French-Belgian border before marching to Mons and seeing the first major battle for British Forces and when the British had to tactically retreat due to German numbers.

Alice and her brigade fought through most of the battles during the British withdrawal from Mons, especially the defeat at Battle of Le Cateau and “victory” at the Affair of Néry; At Néry on the 1st of September, the captain of the III brigade was killed along many other officers during the battle as the majority British artillery were put were out of action early during the battle and were nearly wiped out clean by German Cavalry.

Now Alice find herself Captain of a tired and spent III Brigade of the Royal Horse Artillery just stationed by the Marne River in France, September 4th 1914. As the concerns of the soldiers in her brigade rise and word about the real causality loses slowly spreading, Alice can’t help but feel insignificant in the war effort; but Alice knows her duties as an officer and has maintained face as any British Officer should, for the lads and ladies.
