It’s about him taking a step toward vulnerability, toward letting someone see the part of him he’s tried to keep buried. The cat is a metaphor for how he sees himself: broken, left out in the cold, not worth saving. But unlike before, he doesn’t walk past. He doesn’t give up—not on it, and not entirely on himself.
