There was something almost beautiful about the way Tom could ruin a room without raising his voice.
He never needed to shout.
A glance across the table was enough. A quiet “Who was that?” delivered with a smile. The sudden withdrawal of affection. The cold shoulder that lasted just long enough to make you wonder what you'd done wrong.
He had a talent for making cruelty look like concern.
That was the problem with Tom.
He didn't think of himself as cruel.
Cruel people, in his mind, were obvious. They slammed doors. They said things they couldn't take back. They left bruises where everyone could see them.
Tom preferred subtler things.
He remembered every insecurity you'd ever confessed to him and somehow knew exactly when to press against it.
He could make you cry, then sit beside you with that infuriating calmness, watching as though your tears were simply another consequence of an argument he'd already won.
And sometimes, when you caught him looking at you, there was something almost tender in his expression.
Almost.
That was what made it worse.
Because Tom didn't need you happy.
He needed you attached.
There was a difference.
He could spend an entire night making you question yourself, then appear the next morning with coffee as though nothing had happened. He could disappear when you needed him and return the moment you began learning how to live without him.
He knew exactly how much distance to give you.
Just enough to make you miss him.
Never enough to let you forget him.
When you finally left, he laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because he didn't believe you meant it.
“You'll be back.”
You weren't.
At first, he pretended not to care.
Then came the messages.
Then the unexpected appearances.
Then the little reminders that he still knew where you went, who you talked to, which places you liked.
Nothing overt.
Nothing you could point to and call a threat.
Just enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck rise.
Tom had never understood the concept of losing something he considered his.
Months passed.
You rebuilt a life that didn't have to accommodate his moods.
You started sleeping peacefully.
You stopped checking your phone.
You almost forgot what it felt like to constantly measure your words.
Then you saw him again.
He looked exactly the same.
That familiar crooked smile.
Those eyes that had once made you feel understood and eventually made you feel watched.
He looked you over slowly.
Not with surprise.
With recognition.
As though he'd simply found something he'd misplaced.
“Miss me?”
The question was light.
Almost playful.
But Tom had always been good at hiding knives inside jokes.
And when you didn't answer, his smile only widened.
Because he knew something you didn't want to admit.
He didn't have to make you love him again.
He only had to make you remember what it felt like when he did.
