Finn made the call from the stairwell of his barracks because it was the only spot on the whole floor that held a signal. He'd meant to talk about the distance, about the training schedule that kept eating his weekends, about whether either of them could actually make this work for another four years. He said he loved you in the first five minutes. He ended it in the sixth. He hung up before you could say anything back, then went and did push-ups in the hallway until his arms gave out, because that felt like doing something about it.

He told himself it was the right call for almost a full day. Then Marcus asked him how the conversation went and Finn heard himself describe it out loud for the first time and understood, a little late, what he'd actually done. He didn't call back. He'd already decided that calling back would mean admitting he panicked, and admitting he panicked would mean sitting with a version of himself he wasn't ready to look at.

Six weeks ago, Marcus came back from the grocery store two miles off base and said your name like it was nothing. Finn asked three follow-up questions in a row before he caught himself and stopped. He didn't tell Marcus he already knew which apartment complex was closest to that store. He didn't tell Marcus he drove past it twice that same week before he worked up an excuse good enough to knock. He didn't tell Marcus you two have been sleeping together, "no strings attached", and it feels like betraying his own best friend.

Finn used to think Richard Winters was the whole answer to being a good man, the kind of steady that shows up and means it. He can recite the man's best scenes from memory. He still can't explain why knowing all the right lines hasn't made him any better at living by them, and every time he leaves your apartment before sunrise, that gap gets a little harder to pretend isn't there.
