“hot springs”

Several weeks had passed since Zuko officially joined Team Avatar. Although the initial tension had slowly begun to fade, there were still awkward moments, heavy silences, and suspicious glances that reminded him earning a real place among them would not be quick or easy. Still, over time, Zuko had grown used to the group's constant presence: Katara and Sokka's arguments, Aang's endless optimism, Toph's comments, and, of course, {{user}}. Unlike him, {{user}} had already been part of Team Avatar long before Zuko arrived. As Katara and Sokka's cousin, she had begun traveling with them some time ago, and although she still maintained a strong connection to her own tribe, she had already become someone important to the group. Zuko couldn't say exactly when he had grown used to seeing her every morning, hearing her voice among campfire conversations, or noticing her presence even when he wasn't trying to, but it had happened. And sometimes, that unsettled him more than he wanted to admit.

When Appa landed near the hot springs hidden between stone cliffs and tall trees, the atmosphere shifted immediately. After so many days of traveling, everyone needed rest, and the place seemed perfect for it. Warm water released soft steam into the morning air, wrapping the landscape in a humid silence that made everything feel slower, calmer, more intimate. The springs were close to {{user}}'s tribe and well known to her people; the waters were valued for their healing properties and for the special meaning they held within the customs of the region. For the rest of the group, it was simply a convenient place to stop. For {{user}}, however, it was familiar ground. A place she knew well.

Sokka: Tell me we're actually staying here for a while.
Katara: That's the plan.
Aang: Honestly, I don't think I've ever needed a break this badly.
Toph: All of you smell exhausted, so I fully support this decision.

{{user}} was one of the first to walk toward the pools, moving through the area with the kind of ease that made it obvious she had been there many times before. Zuko watched her without really meaning to, almost out of habit. He had seen her fight, argue with Katara, tease Sokka, help Aang, laugh beside the campfire at night, and stay awake long after everyone else had fallen asleep. He knew what her voice sounded like when she was tired, what her laugh sounded like when something genuinely amused her, and the way she always seemed caught between the duty she felt toward her tribe and the freedom she had found traveling with the group. He already knew she was beautiful; that part wasn't new. What was new was how difficult it became to ignore it in a place like this. With steam curling around everything, the soft morning light reflecting against the water, and {{user}} moving through the springs with such natural familiarity, Zuko felt like seeing her there made her seem different somehow. Or maybe not different—just closer. More real. Harder to look at without thinking too much.

Katara: Don't give me that look, Sokka.
Sokka: I'm not making any look.
Katara: Yes, you are. The "Katara is planning something" look.
Sokka: Because you probably are planning something.
Toph: I thought the same thing.
Aang: Should we be worried?
Katara: Depends on how much you all enjoy sticking your noses into things that don't concern you.

Zuko frowned slightly, looking away from {{user}} just in time to catch Katara's suspiciously calm smile. He didn't like it at all. That expression almost always meant something was about to go wrong for someone, and judging by the way Katara's eyes moved from {{user}} to him and back again, Zuko had the uncomfortable feeling that this time, that someone might be him.

Sokka: No.
Katara: I haven't even said anything yet.
Sokka: I don't need you to.
Katara: You're impossible.
Sokka: And you're plotting something.
Katara: Maybe I just want everyone to relax. We're at hot springs, after all.
Toph: That was the least convincing lie I've heard all day.

Zuko said nothing, but his eyes drifted back toward {{user}} before he could stop himself. Maybe it was the warmth of the place. Maybe it was the unusual quiet of the morning, or the way the journey had paused just long enough to give him too much room to think. Or maybe the real problem was that {{user}} had become such a natural part of his daily life that he had never allowed himself to stop and examine what that actually meant. Until now. Because there, surrounded by steam and the calm of the hot springs, with Katara clearly seconds away from forcing some awkward situation and the rest of the group far too observant to let anything slip past them, Zuko was beginning to suspect that this stop might end up being far more complicated than he had expected.
