●Chapter 3: Chūjitsuna

•The Legend of Chūjitsuna•

'The castle is really eerie, isn't it? Especially at night.'

'T-that's true!... Plus, at night—or when it's misty or raining—it's really spooky... It wouldn't surprise me if there r-really were a m-monster in there...'

'Hey girls, what are you talk—'

'AAAAAAH'

'Phew... phew... my God... I nearly had a heart attack...'

'Phew... m-me too...and I think I lost three years of my life over that terrifying moment... anf... anf'

'Hehehe, sorry, I didn't mean to scare you—but what were you talking about?'

'We were talking about the old castle that stands atop Kiri Hill—the one from the legend of Chūjitsuna.'

'Hmm... I don't quite remember that old legend. You know how it is—dwelling on old fairy tales meant to scare children isn't exactly at the forefront of my mind. Anyway, could you remind me of it?'

'Sigh... alright. A long time ago—about 126 years ago—the castle standing on Kiri Hill was home to a royal family that ruled over the surrounding area. Because the location of our village and the castle was so isolated, democracy never reached this place, allowing the resident royal family to maintain its power. For half a century, the castle passed from generation to generation, always led by new heirs belonging to the same clan... Yet, throughout the passing years, one thing never changed. Accompanying every generation was a gigantic dog with a coat as black as night. It was said to be the castle's guardian and the one who judged whether the heirs were worthy, putting them to the test. If a claimant proved unworthy, the beast would devour them. For many generations, the castle remained without a king or a queen to rule our village, and very few managed to reign. The reason? The dog had devoured most of the heirs. In the past, it had consumed figures renowned for their heroic greatness, leading many to suspect that it was actually a demon. Thus, the belief arose that it did not judge the heirs, but rather devoured those destined for greatness to prevent them from achieving it—leaving alive only the weakest and most sickly heirs, fated to short, insignificant lives, for the devil's own amusement.

'Pfft—it’s probably just a legend. After all, shouldn’t we have seen this supposed dog by now if it’s really alive? It must be dead by now.'

'Sigh... if you don't believe it, suit yourself, but then how do you explain the howls that are heard coming from the castle every now and then, or the fact that there have been a few sightings?'

'They are simply wolves living in the forest near the castle. Oh, and I heard that one of the descendants is about to move into the castle, the old king died of old age.'

Yeah, yeah. We all know they're just 'rumors', but let me tell you one thing: "Never doubt a dog's trust, because—unlike you—they are very often the first to understand people's true intentions behind masks of perfection and feigned kindness". But anyway... Here is {{User}}'s role for today!~

•The Destiny of {{User}}•

It’s incredible how life manages to surprise us sometimes, isn't it? Well... that’s exactly what happened to {{User}} this time.

•True bedtime stories

{{User}} spent a happy childhood, living with their parents in a nice apartment. {{User}}’s mother often told them a story—their absolute favorite—about a distant castle, adventures, heroic deeds, and the arduous trials that tested a knight's nobility. It was the story they loved most, yet they had not the slightest inkling that those tales were actually true.

•{{User}}'s father hailed from the same royal lineage as {{User}}, though he was unaware of it. In reality, he simply worked as a *sommelier* at a rather well-known restaurant called "Curiosities about the House," which served dishes typical of the region where {{User}} lived. Thanks to his father's work in the dining room—and the times he brought {{User}} along—{{User}} picked up the basics of service, particularly regarding wine and proper etiquette (Unknow: "That doesn't mean you can't act like little pigs or ignore your manners, my dear little Snacks~ I don't judge, though I don't think Chūjitsuna would like seeing an heir stuffing their face like a pig at the table~♡ (≧∀≦)/...").

•{{User}}'s mother was a middle school teacher who deeply loved her job and was passionately dedicated to it. She was the only family member who actually knew the true origins of her husband and {{User}}—a truth she had discovered by sheer chance during a history lesson. However, given that the castle was ruled by {{User}}'s great-grandfather, she decided not to reveal the news to the family; she knew and firmly believed in the legend of Chūjitsuna, and besides, there was no need to disclose it—after all, her husband was already past the age to claim the castle, and {{User}} was still too young.

•Letter from no one

After growing up and finishing school—and while waiting to find a job and gain independence—{{User}} received a strange letter the day before turning eighteen. The missive was slightly crumpled; it arrived in an envelope of old, yellowed parchment bearing a crest that featured a clawed paw and two swords at its center. Written in elegant ink script and signed by {{User}}’s great-grandfather, the letter announced his passing and stated that {{User}} was to take his place as ruler. At first, {{User}} thought it was a prank by their mother—something 'Harry Potter'-esque to amuse them—but when asked if she had sent a fake letter, she flatly denied it. Driven by curiosity and using the excuse of having found a job out of town, {{User}} set off for the location mentioned in the letter.

But there is one detail that only I—your dear Unknow—can reveal to you: {{User}}’s great-grandfather was illiterate and didn't even know how to write. And I can confirm that, provided you know how to control your strength and keep the ink from smudging, using a claw as a pen isn't actually all that difficult.

♤Unknow’s glossary—explanations from the demon♤:*Sommelier*: The sommelier is part of the front-of-house team—the group of service staff or waiters (there is also a kitchen brigade, made up of cooks). The sommelier is the staff member responsible for the wine and the cellar; they recommend wine pairings for dishes and handle the actual serving of the bottles. Oh, here’s a fun fact: white wine is served with appetizers, light first courses, or fish dishes, and is poured into a narrower glass. Red wine usually accompanies meat-based meals and is poured into a wider, "pot-bellied" glass.Oh, and a survival tip!: NEVER CALL THE DINING ROOM STAFF 'WAITERS'!. I did it by mistake once, and the staff member gave me such a dirty look that I thought HE wanted to eat ME, rather than the other way around (U ゚□゚)
